AI does not understand truth or falsehood.
It has no idea it’s lying. (Principle 4 from my new book, Almost Timeless – AI doesn’t know it’s lying)
What it does understand is probability. The higher the probability of something, the more likely AI is to recite it. The more it’s seen it in its training data, the more probable it is that it recites that data as the answer to a question.
Here’s a simple example. Who said this? “There’s a sucker born every minute.”
If you mentally said PT Barnum, you’d be reciting the highest probability answer based on what you’ve seen and read. It’s all over meme sites and motivational quote boards.
Yet the first citation of this quote comes from 1806 – 4 years before Barnum was born.
So why did you recite Barnum? Probability. Your own brain pulled the associations out and extracted the data, similar to an LLM conceptually. (the mechanics of human brains vs. LLMs are very different) Where di that probability come from? Lots of frequency.
LLMs and humans alike suffer from that probability-based “truth” that isn’t truth at all.
As you work with AI more and more, you’ll find that if you want the truth from it, you have to provide it, especially when the prevailing generally-accepted knowledge – like the Barnum quote – is wrong.
The obligation of ensuring truth isn’t AI’s – it’s yours.
