Will AI Make You Shine Brighter? How to Stand Out in a World of “Average-ification

Warning: this content is older than 365 days. It may be out of date and no longer relevant.

If AI, as some are positing, is going to obliterate critical thinking and reduce people to the mindless blobs featured in WALL-E… isn’t that good for you?

If everyone around you is average at best… then won’t you stand out more?

If all the snake oil folks’ slop they’re peddling is mindless dreck that doesn’t move the needle, isn’t that worth celebrating because you’re going to blow them away with the true, expert results you generate?

Every day on LinkedIn I see people railing against the average-ification of everything ostensibly because of AI. That isn’t new. AI, by its very nature, just makes it faster, cheaper, and easier to do that.

But I keep asking myself, non-ironically, why this is perceived as so bad by these folks. If the bar is getting lower and lower, their star should be shining brighter and brighter, a beacon of excellence in a swamp of same.

Isn’t that good for the humans who excel?

If you’re an office artisan, if you’re a wordsmith, if you’re a creator, then perhaps AI, more than anything, is calling into question the value of the work you do measured against the cost of the work you do – and for good or ill, customers aren’t seeing the value compared to the results.

I talked to an agency owner in content marketing at an event not long ago who said clients were coming in, demanding a 80% fee cut, saying “We know you’re using ChatGPT. We’re using ChatGPT. We’re getting better results from ChatGPT than from you. So we want a fee cut, or you’re fired, because we don’t know what we’re paying for except for someone else to copy and paste from ChatGPT.”

Pay very close attention to that client’s logic. It’s a bucket of ice water for every creative, strategist, and consultant. They didn’t just haggle over price. They ran the A/B test. They put the expensive, ‘artisanal’ human work head-to-head against the cheap, ‘soulless’ machine work. And the human lost — not on feelings or aesthetics, but on results, the very thing human-first folks claim to deliver better than AI.

Before we complain about AI lowering the bar, we have to prove we’re already above it – with the results to back it up that justify the human-first price tag.

Food for thought on a Friday night.
