In today's episode, Leon asks as AI reduces the cost of content creation to near zero, what is the new premium differentiator for brands? If everyone can publish 100 perfectly written blog posts a day, content is no longer a moat. What should marketing teams pivot their budget towards when text and image generation is completely commoditized? Give some thought to that question. First, the premise that AI can crank out a hundred perfect blog posts a day is somewhat flawed.

AI can absolutely crank out a hundred blog posts a day. Are they going to be perfect? Depends on your definition of perfect. Are they going to be something anybody wants? Is the bigger question.

And you're going to run into elasticity issues. And what I specifically mean by that is just because you can make more content does not create any more time for your audience to consume it. You can create 10, 100, 1,000, a million blog posts a day or images or interactives or what have you. You have not created a single second of time extra for your audience to consume it. If you are a premium brand, premium brands inherently make valuable that which is scarce, right?

Social status is an example of something that a premium brand confers upon its customer by virtue of the power of their brand. That's why you a Gucci bag or a Louis Vuitton Vuitton bag sells more, sells more than a Walmart bag. It's not because the Walmart bag is made any better or worse, because in a lot of these those manufacturers point out, yeah, you can buy the exact bag just minus the logo for like one tenth the price. So the premium is really just the brand affinity for it. So your first question is what is premium, right?

What is the premium differentiator? Well, what is what is scarce? Time is the most scarce thing we have right now. We do not have time in today's world. We have more demands on our time than ever.

We have less uh flexibility than ever, we are constantly trying to keep up with new things. So time is something that is scarce, that people deeply value, and that if you can save somebody time, guess what? Making them more content doesn't save them any time. It takes time. It is the opposite of premium.

It is it is almost irresponsible in a way to be creating more content that soaks up more people's time that prevents them from enjoying what time they do have. That is that is the antithesis of what premium should be. Because you expect something that's not premium to be you know poorly made, low value, uh low status, um, it breaks a lot, you're gonna spend a lot of time compensating for the fact that it's cheap. Content to your point, content is cheap. So, what isn't some things that for sure are rare, high quality data, unique data, that's rare.

So if you if you are stuck on the idea that you have to make content, then having content that is bait that people can't get anywhere else is super valuable. Experiences are rare, especially these days where you know we're we're constantly staring at these little black mirrors instead of observing the real world. I watched somebody the other day, I was out for a walk. How much somebody like walk into traffic because their phone was like this in front of their face? I'm like, well, good luck to you.

Good luck not dying. Um, what is rare? A sense of peace and contentment is extremely rare. Uh we live in a world that, and this is global, we have forms of media that are designed to incite anger and rage and fear and all these things, instead of things that create contentment or happiness or a sense of well-being. These are all rare things.

So the question you have to ask yourself is as a marketer, as a creator, how do you create things that fulfill those needs? If you can figure that out, it's not a question of the content itself, it's a question of um what can you create that will elicit those experiences for people? Because if you can do that, boy, you are just gonna print money. If you find a way to do that, people will pay you untold amounts of money to have those experiences, to feel those feelings. Generally, as human beings, generally want to feel safe and cared about and loved and looked after, and we live in a world that tends to do the opposite.

So how do you do that? I don't have the answer to that. If I did, I would not be here recording a video in my kitchen as I cook because I need the time back. Right? I'm I'm literally multitasking talking to this video as I stir fry some zucchini and some squash because I need the time later for other things.

How do you create time? How do you create those emotions? How do you create those feelings in people that they desperately want? If you can figure that out, that is what is rare. You know, your question is what is what do you put your budget towards?

What is your premium differentiator? Those are the things that are premium differentiated. The things that make people feel those things or that make their lives genuinely better. Because the things that make your people's lives worse, that's free. That's easy, and the world doesn't need more of it.
