The Secret to Smarter AI: What You Need to Ask (That It Won’t Tell You)

Ever been to a restaurant with a secret menu?

You have to know that it exists. You have to know what’s on it. You have to know you want it.

Years ago, Justin Levy took me to a restaurant in Tiburon called Guaymas. They had lots of salsas for us gringos, but there was a secret menu of salsa that the average American would injure themselves on. Think Hot Ones, but salsa.

I tried it. I regretted it. But at least I knew of its existence. I knew what it was for, and if I ever wanted it again, I’d know to ask for it.

As more people get into vibe coding and vibe marketing, the secret salsa is an important lesson: you have to know what to ask for. It’s not obvious. And because AI wants to be helpful – and most people define helpful as getting things done fast – AI will not tell you what you’re missing.

For example, last night I was building a web app using Streamlit, Claude Code, and Google Cloud Run. During the basic requirements gathering, at no point did Claude ask me about security measures. It wasn’t until the end when I proactively asked, so, “what kinds of security should we have on this?” that it started coming up with questions and answers for requirements.

As a somewhat experienced (if mediocre) coder, I knew to ask about security. As a tech savvy consumer, I know to ask about privacy. As an owner of a lot of tech, I know to ask about balancing efficiency and effectiveness – going full throttle is fun, but you run out of gas real fast.

The big question is, do you know what to ask for? As you embark on your own AI-enabled technology builds, do you know what to ask for, what to look for, what to wonder about, what to get help with? If you don’t, you might build, say, a web app with no security. You might build a database with no ACID compliance. You might build any number of things that are great in prototype but less great in production.

AI may not know to ask, so you have to be the one doing the asking.
