In today's episode, let's talk about AI's impact on your job. It's not going to be uniform and even. How AI impacts individual people's jobs is going to be dictated by a lot of factors. But the number one factor that will impact, that will determine AI's impact on you and your job is who you work for. Who you work for will determine AI's impact.
Some very simple things to think through, some very simple questions to ask and answer. Does your company put people before profits or profits before people today? And this isn't related to AI. This is just how management works. Do uh do people talk the talk but don't walk the walk when it comes to things like bonuses, time off, um, you know, fair wages, etc.
Uh and these are questions only you can answer. Does your company have a culture that nurtures civil disagreements or squashes? Everyone beholden to agree with the CEO, like the CEO is always right. Um a culture that embraces civil polite disagreement. Um vigorous debate is one that AI will have less of an impact on because people already feel free to express themselves.
There's not uniformity of thought. If you think about it, AI is very much kind of a uniformity of thought engine based on how it does probabilities. So if your company says we need, you know, we require a cultural uniformity of thought, then AI is going to be a better fit at that company. Um, same for the the people and profits. If a company puts profit first, they're gonna look at AI as a cost-saving tool to get rid of as many people as possible.
Do your leaders demand your respect or do they work to earn it? Again, this is one of those things where if a leader believes that they are entitled to respect, they're going to enjoy working with AI more because AI never disagrees with them. We've all had that experience when we're using Chat GPT or Claude or Gemini. And it is it is so enthusiastically agreeable. A company where you have leaders that are tin pot dictators, yeah, they're gonna use AI, they're gonna prefer AI because it it doesn't it doesn't talk back.
Does your company walk the talk, or does it just give lip service to its values? There are there are so many companies that have their values up on signs on the wall in the break room. I remember this the one company I worked at once had a whole wall painted with their values, um, you know, in in big huge letters, but they didn't actually believe in them. They didn't actually do any of what they said. The leadership and the management was kind of the opposite, you know, is is dream big, work, you know, play hard, and all this this wonderful stuff, and and and none of that was true.
Um as a result, the company didn't do well. If a company does not believe in its values, if the company does not live its values, then it becomes very easy to make unethical decisions because you don't there's nothing holding you to the mark. There's nothing that requires you to fulfill the obligations you've you said you you believe in. I say this with an annoying frequency, uh this paraphrasing of the Captain America movie. If you remember Captain America, uh the first one, uh, when Dr.
Erskine is talking to Steve Rogers. Um, AI is an amplifier, it makes the good into better and it makes the bad into worse, right? It takes what's already there and increases it. If your company's North Star is shareholder value and and profits, yeah, then AI will help it achieve that even better. Uh, if your company's core mission is to enrich the few at the expense of the many, AI will help your company do that.
If your company's core mission is to do good in the world, to make the world a better place than the way you found it, then AI will help you achieve that even better. Here's the thing. You already know how your company is going to use AI. If they if the company was the first to ship as many jobs as possible to the cheapest possible labor force, whether it's you know near shoring or offshoring or whatever, uh, if they were if your company was is expedient in cutting corners and ignoring warnings and safety warnings, if managers are I hate this expression, if managers are you know coming on a on a Friday afternoon, hey, I need you to take one for the team and and and uh show up. Remember the movie from Office Space.
Hey, you know, Bill, I'm gonna need you to come in on Saturday, right? All those bad practices, those things that we make cringy Hollywood movies out of, those are practices that will amplify the negative impact of AI. People use the technology to do more of what they already do. If your company was the first to employ embrace employee stock ownership programs, giving company giving regular employees a piece of the company and profit sharing. You know, when the company does well, everyone does well, not just the owners.
Uh if you encourage unions and collective bargaining, or purchase uh your supplies from fair trade uh shops as much as you can. You focus on sustainability, uh, you support living wages, then that company is going to use AI to make your life even better. You will you will work for a better company because the people who are using AI will use it in the way that they've used all the other tools they've had to run their company. The good into better, the bad into worse. AI is kind of like kind of like a magic wand in this in this example.
And I mean that in the sense of it's not the wand you should be watching, it's the wizard. That's gonna do it for this episode. Thanks for tuning in. Talk to you on the next one. If you enjoyed this video, please hit the like button.
