Choose good or fast.
There’s a knob with two settings when we’re using AI research tools: quality and speed.
And there’s no middle setting, because a middle setting would deliver half-assed results that were neither fast nor correct.
The more I use AI tools for research, the more I realize that you only get two choices. You can get quick answers from tools like AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google that are riddled with hallucinations and mixed up summaries.
Or you can kick off research projects in ChatGPT Work, Claude Cowork, OpenCode, Gemini Spark, etc. that will take a couple of hours to run, then merge and deduplicate the results – and get high quality, fact checked research that’s practically an information product pipeline, but expect a single research project to take 2-4 hours.
What this means for each of us is that delegating research tasks to AI means planning ahead, thinking ahead, budgeting time and resources for agentic research tools to go off and do their thing. It means thinking about what’s needed well before it’s needed, so that when we’re asked to bring the goods to the table, they’re pre-baked.
Think of it more like a research agency on tap. You wouldn’t call up a research agency the day a document was due. You would call them well in advance, give them the research brief, let them do their thing, and get the research product back whenever it was done, knowing it was done well.
Fast or good. There is no middle setting, no nuance in today’s AI research tools.
