“Do we really trust Chinese models that much?””
Lisa asked that question in the Trust Insights Analytics for Marketers Slack group and the short answer is, “we really trust models under our control that much”, which means open weights models, models we download and run on our own hardware or in trusted inference providers.
Here’s why, in a nutshell: you can see what they’re doing. If you’re using a harness like OpenCode or a server like Koboldcpp, you can see every word of their thinking, every nuance. Anthropic, OpenAI, Google – none of these companies let you see this in their models. You get summaries and platitudes, not the raw, ugly outputs.
A model is like an engine. An engine that’s in my car (assuming I know how to maintain cars) is one I’d trust to go driving around with. An engine in someone else’s car? Not so much – I don’t know what’s in the rest of their car. I don’t know if the transmission is rusted out, or they installed spy cameras all over the passenger cabin.
That’s why we have to be super clear that a model hosted by a company/service in the People’s Republic of China is unsafe from a data privacy perspective (and probably a dozen other perspectives). They’re fine to use for basic, public tasks (like research) but never for anything even remotely confidential.
That same model in your hardware, where you can inspect everything it does and see it happening in real-time? That’s MORE trustworthy than what you get out of closed services like Gemini, Claude, and ChatGPT. You cannot see how ChatGPT decided how to solve the problem – you only get the result.
And yes, there are open weights models from companies around the world – Mistral in France, Gemma from Google, Nemotron from NVIDIA, K-EXAONE from LG, etc. You don’t have to use models from China specifically, though Chinese open models at this point at the highest performing in the world.
I’ve said for more than a decade that transparency is the currency of trust, and I trust what I can see. I can’t see what closed providers are doing behind the scenes, so I trust them less than every word I can inspect when a model is running under my control. I can’t see what they’re doing with my data, but I know where my data is at all times when I’m using it with a Chinese model on my machine.
