The AI Pay Cut: Why 10x Productivity Isn’t Raising Your Salary

AI is a pay cut for you, the human.

It’s tempting to take the easy route and talk about a stagnant job market, or tech companies using AI as a cover for large scale job cuts, but that’s not what I’m talking about here.

A decade ago, Katie Robbert and I worked at a PR firm, and that firm used – bizarrely – a manufacturing ERP system and timekeeping system to manage the PR firm. Employees were measured in billable hours like factory workers – if you didn’t produce enough billable hours as a work product, you were disciplined. We’ll put aside whether that’s even the right way to manage a PR firm, but the example is illustrative for this purpose.

Suppose as a knowledge worker you are paid a salary of 80000 a year, and you are expected to deliver something like 10 pieces of content a week. Great, the math is easy, you get paid 80000 / 1920 (the rough number of working hours in a year plus 10 paid holidays plus 2 weeks PTO), making your hourly effective wage 41.67 an hour.

In other words, at 10 pieces of content a week or 2 per workday, you get paid (in an 8 hour day) 333 a day, or 166.50 per piece of content.

Now… suppose you get a fancy new AI tool. You can now generate 20 pieces of content a day instead of 2. You’re the mythical 10x worker, the paragon of corporate virtue.

Do your earnings skyrocket from earning 80K a year to earning 800K a year? Why not? You’re doing 10x the work, you’re producing 10x the content. You’re a rockstar! And yet you’ll be lucky to even get a cost of living increase this year at annual review time.

In other words, AI helped you go from earning 166.50 per piece of content to earning 16.65 per piece of content. It gave you a 90% pay cut per unit of work.

As an owner, this is a capitalist’s wet dream. You can generate 10x the billable units of work but not have to pay your humans 10x more, because the tool can do it and you just fold it under efficiency. Yeah, you pay more in API costs – but not 10x more, nor does it come with all the addon costs like benefits.

Is it any wonder resistance to AI is so high?
