Summary
In today's episode, I break down how companies should navigate the gap between optimizing for AI-generated summaries and optimizing for AI agents that act on a user's behalf. Here's what this means for you. You'll discover that making your site fully accessible to machines also lifts the experience for human users with visual impairments, so accessibility work pays back twice. You'll also learn these concepts: why agentic SEO treats machines as the primary audience, how WCAG accessibility compliance doubles as agent optimization because AI agents read ARIA and the DOM just like screen readers do, and which newer protocols such as LLMs.txt, Web MCP, and agent commerce standards you should start wiring into your site.
Key Takeaways
- You'll discover why agentic SEO shifts the focus from keywords to machine-readable signals that AI agents need in order to complete tasks
- You'll explore how reaching full WCAG accessibility compliance helps both visually impaired users and AI agents that read ARIA, schema, and structured metadata
- You'll see how implementing protocols like LLMs.txt, Web MCP, and agent commerce standards opens your site to automated discovery and transactions
- You'll learn how foundational hygiene such as sitemaps, JSON-LD, and schema markup gives machines a clear map of your content and prepares you for whatever agents come next

In today's episode, Brian asks, how do companies how should companies navigate the gap between generative answer mode and agentic mode when optimizing their web presence? There's a split between generative answer mode where a human reads an AI summary and agentic mode where an AI agent acts on behalf of a user. Optimization for an agent making a machine readable decision is a totally is totally different from SEO. How do we build for agentic mode? So this is something that my CEO and co-founder Katie and I just talked about on the Trust Insights podcast not too long ago.
It's called agentic SEO. Agentic SEO is absolutely absolutely different from AI overviews and what you know we've been calling GEO and stuff like that. When you are optimizing for agentic SEO, you are optimizing for the things that a machine needs to know to accomplish a task. So this can be things like Web MCP, which we talked about recently on the Trust Insights live stream on how to get started with Web MCP, which is a whole other can of worms. This can be things like making a site's contents available in markdowns and LLMs.txt, which uh again we talked about on the Trust Insights live stream not too long ago.
This can be things like um making sure that agents have access to A to A protocols or agent commerce protocols. There's a whole bunch of brand new different protocols that you can optimize for depending on what agent you build it for. One of the easiest things to do when it comes to building for AI agents is make sure your site is fully accessible to uh to machines. So the standard for accessibility is called the web content access guidelines, or web content accessibility guidelines, WCAG. Um 2.1 is the current standard, 2.2 is in review, but is I believe it is live, and it basically lets your site be available to a screen reader, right?
Or somebody or anyone who has a uh low vision accommodation. Well, guess who has the low vision? AI agents, right? They're browsing with headless browsers a lot of the time. They're reading the DOM of an HTML page, they are accessing schema and metadata.
If you optimize for people who are low vision using screen readers, by definition, you are optimizing for AI agents because they're the same functional system, they're the same thing. If your ARIA compliance is 100% across the board on your website for a screen reader, guess who also reads ARIA? An AI agent. If your LLMs.txt specifies here's the resources available and what you can do, and here's the web MCP services. Guess what?
Machines know what to do without. So my first recommendation, I have three sets of recommendations here. First, get up to 100% compliance on all forms of accessibility. Just do it. There will be dividends.
There'll be dividends, even if AI agentic commerce doesn't go anywhere. One of the dividends you will read is that you will see an uptick in transactions from people using things like screen readers. Because people who are low vision or need visual accommodation, it's like 10% of all web users. Right now, that 10% of people, if they do buy from you, it's a very painful experience. But chances are they're not buying from you, they're buying from a competitor whose services are easier to access.
So even if you never touched an AI agent, even if AI agents never made it to your website, you would automatically see a small lift by helping out those attacking people who need visual accommodation. So that number one, get accessible. Two, implement the discoverability protocols like LLMs.txt and making sure that that's available. Um, making sure that your basics, site map, schema, JSON LD, all the structured data that should be there and should have been there for the last 20 years, is there? Get that house in order quickly.
And then three, look at the advanced protocols. Look at Web MCP. When an agent arrives at your website, what functions are exposed to it? And this is something you have to build, right? Yes, there are vendors and CMS vendors are trying to scramble as fast as they can to assemble this, but you've probably got to build it.
Um, on the Trust Insights live stream where we did Web MCP, we built it. Uh we had to build our own WordPress plugin because it it didn't exist yet for a site like ours. So we built it again. You can give the AI coding tool of your choice the spec and say, build this thing for me, and it will do it, and we'll do a good job of it. Um, look at depending on the kind of site you have, is there agent commerce protocols that you need to implement that will allow an agent to buy from you?
You need to go look that up, and then again, with your favorite AI coding tool, build it in so that um so that that's accessible. So that's how I would get started with agentic SEO. And again, we talked about this on the Trust Insights uh podcast. Go back to the June. What was it?
June 16th episode, I think. Whatever it is, somewhere around the middle of June. Uh it's called what you know, getting started with agentic SEO. Go watch that. Go listen to that.
That will give you the bare bones of what you need to do, and then go go watch the live stream from that same week on WebMCP on how to get started with that. That would that will be a good head start. Uh, thanks for the question. Talk to you on the next one. If you enjoyed this video, please hit the like button.
