What’s On My Mind: What Would A Purely AI-Generated Newsletter Look Like?

In this week’s newsletter, I want to pull on a thread from last week. I write this newsletter by hand, either by physically putting fingers on keyboard or by voice dictation. Either way, what you get – for good or ill – is almost completely me. For example, last week, I forgot two really important sentences that were in the video but not in the text. Oops.

But one of the questions I’ve gotten from MANY a marketer is how to create a purely AI newsletter that was still useful. It would lack that spark of humanity, sure, but for folks (again, for good or ill) who don’t have the resources but have been given the mandate to publish, how COULD we do it? So I figured, as part of my ongoing promotion of my new course, AI for Writers, I’d take a shot at making an issue of a purely-AI newsletter.

Part 1: What’s the Big Idea?

Before we write a word (or AI writes a word), we need an idea. We need an angle that no one else is likely to have. One of the biggest meta-challenges everyone has right now is that today’s AI models all pretty much know the same things. They all know content strategy, they all know how to write (even if their writing is very, very canned), and they all have the same basic facts, the stuff published on the public internet.

In other words, everyone’s got the same kitchen setup, the same skills, and the same chefs. In that scenario, what differentiator can you offer to get people to dine with you?

The answer: you either differentiate on ingredients or recipes. If everyone has the same people and platforms – and presumably the same purpose and performance, if we’re following The 5P Framework by Trust Insightsโ„ข then your only differentiator is process, how to direct the chefs, what they cook, and what ingredients you give them.

So you have two choices: better ingredients or better methods (or both).

Which you choose guides the big idea behind your AI-generated newsletter. Do you have unique data that no one else has, that no one else’s AI has seen, that would allow you create different results than everyone else is getting? That’s the ingredients-led approach.

Do you have unique ways of manipulating data that no one else has or knows, that take advantage of AI blindspots? That’s the process-led approach.

Here’s a simple example. We all have access to basic trends data from places like our favorite SEO tools or Google Trends. That’s not new or news. But if we have our own data from inside our company we can blend with it, like customer feedback, qualitative data, or proprietary data, then like a good hot sauce, we can add that into the same basic ingredients and get a very different tasting dish.

OR, if we have that same data but we know methods like SARIMAX, neural forecasting, or additive regression, we can take data everyone has access to but do different things with it like forecasting.

And if we have both? Unique insights into data plus unique ways of manipulating it? That’s REALLY going to set us apart.

For this experiment, let’s go with a data source everyone has access to – whether you know it or not – and a unique way of manipulating it.

Part 2: AI’s Blind Spot

Because generative AI is trained not only in absolute probabilities, but in probabilities with nearness, it has a huge blind spot, and that blind spot is the same one you and I suffer from: tunnel vision. Not the literal medical phenomenon, but being blind to the unfamiliar.

Here’s an example. If I say we’re talking about eggs in the context of food we eat. What comes to mind? Fried eggs, maybe. Scrambled eggs. Omelets. Poached eggs. If you want to get fancy, eggs Benedict with a nice Hollandaise sauce. We think of eggs principally in the context of breakfast, and those foods I just listed were probably on your top mental list.

Not as many of you thought about shakshuka, or a bowl of ramen with a quail egg, or egg and herb piroshki (a Ukrainian dish with a dough filled with chopped hard boiled eggs, farmerโ€™s cheese, and tons of herbs). Why? These are very different contexts, cultures, and applications. If you know of them, you might have eventually gotten to them, but they were probably not top of mind.

Likewise, suppose I talk about marketing analytics. What comes to mind? Probably either Google Analytics or Adobe Analytics, then maybe your CRMโ€™s analytics, or maybe your social media management softwareโ€™s analytics. Maybe you thought of analytics techniques like attribution (broadly) but you probably didnโ€™t immediately land on Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation (MCMC), even though thatโ€™s a reasonably well known analysis technique outside of marketing.

The association with high probability concepts is a blind spot of both ours and AI, AI even more so because if we donโ€™t know to ask it to think outside the box, it never will. Thus, if we want to create content thatโ€™s truly different, we have to think outside the box first before we type even a single character of a prompt.

In last yearโ€™s book Almost Timeless: 48 Foundation Principles of Generative AI, one of the concepts was called โ€œAdd a bananaโ€ – forcing different probability distributions in an AI response by making it use words outside of the domain youโ€™re writing it. Asking AI to write a report about marketing analytics but requiring it to use the word โ€œbananaโ€ creates different probability distributions than not requiring it, because bananas are not typically in marketing analytics.

We can extend that concept significantly by feeding large, out of domain ideas to AI and forcing it to reconcile whatโ€™s out of domain with whatโ€™s in domain – and thatโ€™s how youโ€™ll create an AI-generated newsletter thatโ€™s worthwhile. Whatโ€™s out of domain but still valuable that you can use as starting materials?

Once weโ€™ve figured out how to feed AI out of the box thinking and ideas, we can start creating our machine-generated newsletter.

Part 3: Mise En Place

To create our newsletter, we need the following items, based on The 5P Framework by Trust Insightsโ„ข:

  • Purpose: Why are we doing the newsletter? For clout? For web traffic? For leads? Because our boss said to make a newsletter and we have 40 other items on our to do list that are equally high priority and itโ€™s just one more thing on our list? Letโ€™s be clear up front about why. For the purposes of my demo today, I want to take a concept from the AI for Writers course – an out of domain newsletter is something Iโ€™d read, but itโ€™s not something Iโ€™d want to write. So I want to make a newsletter for myself that Iโ€™d find interesting.
  • People: Whoโ€™s the audience? If weโ€™re writing a newsletter for other people, who are they? What do they want out of a newsletter? Whatโ€™s their ideal customer profile or persona? For this example today, Iโ€™m the audience. I want an interesting newsletter to read, something that teaches me things I donโ€™t know, something that makes me think differently.
  • Process: How are we going to make the newsletter? What ingredients, recipes, and techniques do we need? If weโ€™re making a newsletter for others, what are the best practices (read: minimum competencies) of newsletter design that we should use? What voice will we make AI write in?
  • Platform: If weโ€™re distributing a newsletter, what platform will we use? Something homegrown like Ghost? Beehiiv? Substack? Go hardcore and set up Postfix on a Linux box? Do we have to worry about deliverability, about DNS records, services like Cloudflare and Google Postmaster Tools? Obviously, if Iโ€™m making a newsletter for myself, then I donโ€™t have to worry about any of this, but if I were making it for others, itโ€™d be a big list of things to do. And thatโ€™s before we even think about how to have AI write it so itโ€™s not completely mind numbing.
  • Performance: What does success look like? Readership? Sponsors? Leads? For a newsletter thatโ€™s made for me, it has to make me happy, or teach me something. But for a commercial newsletter, thereโ€™s probably some kind of downstream metric that matters.

Once weโ€™ve worked out all these details, we can build our newsletter.

Part 4: Walkthrough and Demo

One of the enduring realities that I struggle with constantly is that there are far more good ideas out there than I have time to consume, and many of those ideas are in domains that I donโ€™t have expertise in. I was a C student in mathematics for the entirety of my academic career. I understood the general concepts but struggled mightily with implementation; sciences like biology, physics, and chemistry came to me much more easily, and computer science most of all.

But AI solves that for me, in part because once I understand the overall concept, I add it to my vocabulary, and then AI can write the code to implement it. So if I want something really valuable for myself, I need a newsletter that adds to my vocabulary, that teaches me what to ask AI.

More important, great ideas are EVERYWHERE, in every discipline, and researchers often make their works publicly accessible. In any given industry, thereโ€™s usually some kind of academic conference or symposium where researchers submit their papers for talks and awards. If we look at the vast spectrum of different fields out in the world, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of award winning papers every year.

Thatโ€™s going to be the basis of our newsletter – taking an award winning paper and interpreting it, reframing the best ideas for a field I donโ€™t know into a field I know. Our first step should be research – identifying the main conferences in every major discipline, then having an AI agent hunt down the papers and store them locally. This is mostly just web search, so we donโ€™t have to use big, expensive AI to do it – OpenCode with something like DeepSeek v4 Flash is plenty enough horsepower.

Here’s an example of a starter prompt:

Using NAICS top level and first sub level professions as the basis for your investigation, use your web search tools to identify the top academic conferences in each profession. Store this information in a journal in the output/notes folder with subfolders for each profession name in kebab case. Example: NAICS 2111 is top level code 21, mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction. First sublevel code 2111 is oil and gas extraction, thus youโ€™d look for oil and gas extraction conferences and write your notes to output/notes/2111-oil-gas-extraction/. Once youโ€™ve identified all the academic conferences, then search each conference for the top award winning papers submitted in 2025 and 2026. Award winning papers may be awarded status like gold, silver, etc. Or submitters may have been awarded an oral presentation at the conference as a signal of paper quality. Identify the source papers that won awards, then use your web search tools to find the PDF version of the papers. Store them with an index in the output/papers folder by NAICS sublevel code and conference in kebab case. Example: output/papers/2111-oil-gas-extraction/spe-2026-annual-meeting/. If no PDF is available, skip the paper. Once all papers have been downloaded, use the MarkItDown CLI to convert the PDFs to Markdown format. Store the Markdown papers alongside the PDF versions in the same folder.

Expect this to take quite a bit of time, probably a full dayโ€™s worth of extraction – but if you have great data sources like this which are robust, you can run this quarterly and never run out of newsletter topics. In my case, I wanted to save some time and tokens, so I did the research manually from the NAICS website and used Excel to get the list of 4 digit codes. That way, AI could focus on doing the actual research legwork.

Once weโ€™ve got some papers, then we can create our pipeline. The process is to take a paper, summarize its key learnings, identify the specific methodology from the paper that made the findings work – ESPECIALLY any math – and then do a comparative analysis to see what, if anything, can dross domains. This is the kind of starter prompt I’d use, though I’d probably more likely make it a reusable skill or even a programmatic prompt inside actual code:

Based on this award winning academic research paper provided, today we’re going to do multiphase analysis. You’ll read through the paper and create a lexically dense, lexically compressed summary of it in YAML format in the output folder as output/summaries/{paper-name}.yaml in kebab case. Here’s what should be in the summary: the paper title, institution, and investigators, the verbatim abstract, what the core thesis of the paper is about, what new, novel knowledge the paper contributes to the field, what specific techniques researchers used to create the knowledge, what mathematical or computational techniques or principles were used (if any), what the underlying mechanisms are, and how those principles, mechanisms, and techniques might apply to other domains. Our goal is to make as much of the research transferable outside the domain as practical, codifying it for reuse. If yamllint is present in the environment, use it for validation.

This transforms the papers into very dense, very technical summaries, which is what we want – a Cliff’s Notes of the paper we can then use in the next phase of the pipeline.

From here, we give it to the paper generation pipeline. This part uses the techniques and code from the AI for Writer’s Course to generate copy that sounds similar to how I write, and as we discovered in last week’s newsletter, I’ll use the DeepSeek V4 Flash model because it natively already writes the closest to my actual writing. Here’s the starting prompt that I’d turn into a reusable skill:

Based on the included YAML files, we’re going to draft a newsletter article of 4000 words +/- 500 words about how the paper’s key learnings apply to the discipline of marketing. What tough to solve marketing problems could be solved in part or in whole by the novel discoveries from the paper? How might the spcific techniques, principles, tactics, and methodologies from the paper be applied to common challenges marketers face? We are applying a metacognition principle called lateral thinking, where ideas and successes from one domain are applied to another domain, ideas that people in the target domain might never think of. Based on your review and thinking, draft the newsletter article using the writing style fingerprint provided plus the Python script to validate your own writing, achieving the same fingerprint with +/- 10% variance for any given text metric. The newsletter issue should be written in multiple parts: an introduction that introduces the challenge a marketer faces, how marketers have tried to solve the problem and largely failed, the key solutions the paper introduces that marketers may never have heard of, how marketers can apply the key learnings to their marketing challenge in a step by step format, and a conclusion that recaps the key learnings and what marketers next steps are. Write the output in Markdown format, HTML/CSS format and in PDF format using tectonic with the associated brand style guides. The newsletter series is titled Paper2Process, and the issue should be titled P2P: {3-5 Word Title} based on the paper summary. The intended audience is someone like a highly technical marketer, Christopher Penn, who is skilled at languages like Python and other foundational technologies and MarTech – educate him on these key learnings from outside his domain and how they apply to his domain. The overall goal is to teach marketers successful ideas from other disciplines and domains in clear, accessible language.

Once the skill is built, we test it to make sure it operates as intended. If the results are good, then we turn it into a product and start using it. At this point, if I were making this in production, I’d probably create brand-aligned templates and the niceties that belong in a customer-facing product. After that would come the creation of the actual newsletter itself; I might build connectors or API calls to my email marketing system so that the AI harness could load issues directly.

And the best part is if you use inexpensive open weights models like the new GLM-5.3 Flash or DeepSeek V4 Flash (on an inference provider with good data safety like DeepInfra), the cost to do this will be very low. I ran the entire pipeline on one paper using GLM-5.3 Flash in OpenCode for this newsletter and the total cost of the newsletter from paper to newsletter was USD 9 cents. If you wrote a new newsletter issue every day, you’d pay USD 33 for the entire year for the project.

Part 5: Wrapping Up

Good ideas exist everywhere, in every profession, in every discipline. If you’re struggling to solve a problem and everything you know hasn’t worked, it’s time to start looking outside your domain – and that’s what this concept of an automated, AI-powered newsletter delivers.

The bigger picture here is for you to examine what ingredients and recipes you have to uplevel your content. If you’re tired of AI-generated content that all sounds the same, that occupies pages but says nothing, then the techniques I showed in this issue should help you break free. AI is a marvelous translator and a second-rate creator, so use it for what it’s best at – taking existing great ideas and pivoting them to your specific applications.

And the biggest picture for me personally is using these techniques makes me better at what I do, because AI is helping me explore domains of knowledge that would take a lifetime to master. As I said recently, if you use AI to automate your outputs, you risk becoming weaker. If you use AI to automate your inputs – like this custom-built newsletter to teach me things – it can help you become stronger.
