Agentic AI Chat Trap: Why GPT-5, Claude 5, and Gemini Skip Questions (And How to Fix It)

“Ask me up to 20 clarifying questions until you have enough information to succeed at the task.”

I have been advising folks for years to tell AI to ask it questions, but I’ve noticed something in the most recent generation of models – any model that’s tuned for agentic AI specifically really needs a kick in the pants to have it ask more than a handful of questions.

I suspect this is because the process that tunes a model for agent use also tunes it down to avoid asking questions/prompting additional tool calls that can jam or shatter an agentic workflow. As a result, the agentic model works great unattended, but when used in chats, it doesn’t ask ENOUGH questions, instead making assumptions so that it can keep working.

Likewise, I’ve found that agentic models tend to treat the “up to” almost as a target, which means it prompts them to ask far more questions than they would normally, where they opt for 1-4 questions under normal operation.

Which models are tuned for agentic use? Well, almost all the current generation:

  • GPT-5.6, all flavors
  • Claude Opus 5, Fable 5, Sonnet 5
  • Gemini 3.6 Flash (whither 3.6 Pro, Google?)
  • Alibaba Qwen 3.6/3.8
  • DeepSeek v4
  • Minimax M3

If you’re using any tool – from basic web chat to advanced code harnesses – know that the things that make a model great for agentic AI can affect how it works when it’s talking to you, a human, and not an agent or subagent. It’s looking for efficiency, looking for ways to work uninterrupted (including by you) so you have to talk to it in a way that circumvents these optimizations.

Be specific, be clear, be concrete, and give it clear instructions about what you’re doing (“we are planning now, so we will have lots of interactive questions and answers”) to short circuit its agentic tendencies to just go off on its own.
