In today's episode, Eli asks, how does the junior bottleneck impact our talent pipeline if AI is consuming all of the entry-level tasks? Eli says, most entry-level roles used to be 90% just grinding out execution tasks, but now that those things take minutes instead of hours, the bar for entry has shifted to actually having an opinion on the strategy. If the execution work gets absorbed, the learning path breaks. How do juniors learn judgment without doing execution first? In a lot of ways, for junior level folks within within enterprises and specifically enterprise AI, which is what Eli's asking about.
The learning path, if machines are doing the execution, that doesn't mean the machines are doing everything. That means the machines are doing the nuts and bolts typing of things. They still need to be managed. And management is a profession unto itself. Management is a skill.
Things like delegation, time blocking and time management, good communication skills. When you're working with machines, when you're working with AI, that doesn't change. Something that my uh my co-founder and CEO Cadies talks about all the time. You know, new technology doesn't fix old problems, is what she says at literally every opportunity. So when a machine is doing a lot of the basic execution, it still has to be managed.
Someone still has to manage it. Someone still has to operate it. And it's a combination of people management skills in a lot of ways. Good communications is people management. It's a lot of good operational management, right?
You know, time management is operational management. Uh, it's a lot of good delegation and good communication, good project management. So you would probably want to pivot from having people learn execution level skills to having people learn management level skills, the most junior level of management. What is a junior manager expected to know how to do? How should a junior manager be able to communicate well?
How should a junior manager be able to delegate well? How should a junior manager be able to understand strategy and their role in it? Because remember that strategy, tactics, and execution are why, what, and how. Strategy is why, tactics are what, execution is how. If we have accepted that the machines are going to take care of the how, right, that is the execution, which is what we're saying here.
That still leaves why and what. What are you going to do? When you sit down in front of a machine that is taking the role of a the junior most person on the team, you still have to tell it what to do. And a lot of the time, because a lot of companies have not figured this out yet because they didn't do it with their humans, you have to figure out you have to tell them how to do it because it's not necessarily always clear. Again, one of the things Katie talks about all the time is how standard operating procedures are the prerequisite for AI.
If you don't have standard operating procedures written down, written down, there is absolutely positively no way the machine's going to know how to do it correctly. It's going to flail, you're going to flail, and everyone's going to be unhappy. But the why part, the why part is important, right? And yes, the human might not be doing the typing, like they may not be doing the first or after the press release, but they absolutely should be doing the what constitutes a good press release. What constitutes the research needed to accomplish a task.
That is still very, very relevant. Uh in fact, I would say it's more relevant than ever to be able to pulse to do that particular type of task. And it's not something that a machine is natively going to know how to do because machines don't know your company. The machines do not know who you are. You have to tell them.
And a junior person should be in charge of gathering that information, assembling that information, and ultimately deploying that information to the machines in the same way that a junior manager would do so with a human being. So not much has changed. Yes, the number of people doing the grunt work is different and how the grunt work is done, but as we know from Parkinson's law, work expands to fill the space and time given it. Just because the the junior most folks are not doing the execution anymore does not mean that we've run out of work to do. If anything, we can now put those people who have should have functioning brains into more valuable work, like junior level strategy.
Yeah, you may not turn your corporate strategy over to them, but you can turn the strategy for a particular campaign or effort over to them and let them stretch their brains and learn it that way. There's still work to be done. So if you view AI purely as a replacement for those folks and not as an opportunity to let them up level, then yes, you are going to have a talent problem. You're gonna have a talent pipeline problem because you will have replaced all those people. Um a lot of CEOs and senior executives are about to be in a world of hurt when it comes to staffing and stuff because they've all sort of embraced this narrative of let's lay off a bunch of people and have AI do things.
Well, folks, AI is machinery, machinery still needs someone to manage it, and the number of people who are skilled at managing it well is still very small. There's lots of people who can manage AI incompetently. You can see this in like those ultimate prompt guides on LinkedIn where people are like, oh, this is the ultimate prompt to do this, and you look at it, it's like half a paragraph long. Like that's the ultimate prompt for disaster. Uh, that is by no means the ultimate prompt for actually getting anything out of the machine that you want to get from it.
So there's plenty of opportunity for a junior person to become a junior manager to learn how to manage execution well and to have machines do the execution, but the manager is responsible for review for understanding if the task is being done well or not, and when you are in charge of the QA for a task, if a person is properly trained and well motivated, chances are they're going to find that A, the machine's not doing it right a lot of the time, but B, that there are opportunities to improve it. So, someone who is inherently curious, someone who is interested in learning, who is self-motivated, is going to do very well in that environment. And they will they will be your junior person that will become a superstar very, very quickly. Now, here's the challenge. The number of people who are highly self-motivated and curious feels like.
Understandably so, in in some ways. You know, there's a lot of people who feel like companies are not worth investing in their time in because the companies don't invest in them, and for there's a fair number of enterprises that that is very much the case where they want to show up for the nine to five, they want to punch the clock, and they want to get on with their lives, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, it is in there are those folks who will recognize that they have opportunity greater opportunities for advancement if they do invest some of their own time outside of work or extra hours at work to skill up. Those are the people you want to find and identify quickly. You can't mandate it.
You can't tell somebody, oh, you have to work 10 hours, but I'm only going to pay you for eight. You can't do that. That's that is unethical at the least, and depending on labor laws, potentially illegal. But you absolutely can look for people who go above and beyond on their own and try to work with them and move them up as fast as possible. So it's a good question, it's a complicated question.
