Stop Wasting Your AI Budget: How to Plan with Smart Models and Execute with Cheap Ones

Plan big, act small.

With Anthropic’s latest model release, the fabulously expensive Fable 5, it’s a timely reminder that when you have a big, expensive model, you should use it to do planning, and then hand off the execution to a small, fast, cheap model that doesn’t have to think, it just has to follow instructions.

Last night I tried out Fable 5 and it exhausted half of a Claude Max 20 plan’s 5 hour window in just 36 minutes of work, on high setting. When you look at Anthropic’s chart, Fable 5 on high is basically Opus 4.8 on Max, with better results but crazy high costs.

It’s not in Artificial Analysis yet (my favorite apples to apples benchmarking tool) but Fable 5 will definitely be in the top right quadrant as the smartest, most costly model probably by an order of magnitude.

Here’s the thing – if you look at a model like MiniMax M3, it’s about Opus 4.6-level in terms of intelligence. It’s also 2.5 ORDERS of magnitude – 250X – cheaper than Fable 5. Minimax M3 is a good order taker. You give it clear instructions, frameworks, scaffolds, etc. and it will fill in the blanks very capably.

If you teach your team nothing else about AI in the current moment, teach them to plan with smart models and execute with fast, cheap ones. Make sure your tools have these settings accordingly. For example, I run Claude Code with Opus 4.8 to plan, and I run Claude Code with Minimax M3 to execute Opus 4.8 plans. This lets each model do what it does best.

The days of “set it and forget it” for model choice are over if you want to preserve any kind of token budget with AI tools. Think carefully, delegate carefully if you want to squeeze all the juice from what you’re paying for.
