All language is code, and writing is coding.
Yesterday during the SmarterX AI Writer’s Summit, one of my session attendees said, after hearing me speak about using agentic AI to write a fiction novel:
‘But am I “writing” a trashy romance novel or am I “programming” one.’
ALL language is code, and writing is coding. If I say “I’m spilling the tea”, this sentence makes sense to us not only because of the words in it, but because of the specific order of the words in relation to each other and to the sentence as a whole.
If I say “Tea I’m the spilling”, the sentence contains the same raw information but doesn’t make nearly as much sense. Order is part of language, of syntax and grammar, and is predictable.
When you use AI to write, you are generating an output that has to match an order that a reader can understand.
When you use your human brain to write, the same thing is true. If you write gibberish, even if it’s human-led and “authentic”, it’s still tossed word salad.
So are you programming a novel if you use AI to write it? Yes.
But you are also programming a novel if you use your own brain to write it, if you want it to be at all readable.
Think about the things you do when writing, as a human, especially a novel. Character cards. Plot arcs. Scaffolding. Background research. Data collection. Synthesis. All of this can be considered programming, things like classes, functions, variables, etc. It all requires the same effort in planning as coding does. It requires the same thoughtfulness, reflection, seeing the big picture, assembling things in the correct order.
All language is code, and if you understand code, you understand language, and vice versa – and you will be dramatically more effective at having AI generate language.
Final reminder from my talk: don’t give AI things you love to do. If you love to write, if you love the craft, then keep it. No one’s saying you have to give it up.
