To get the most out of AI, use AI as little as possible.
This very contradictory statement does make sense. Generative AI has a tendency to reinvent the wheel. Every time you ask it to complete a task and you don’t provide tools for it to do so, it tends to write them from scratch.
Imagine a chef who didn’t realize that you could go to the store and buy fresh herbs there. Every time you asked for a dish, it would take 3-4 months for the chef to cook it, because they would have to grow the herbs from scratch every single time. You’d never eat at that restaurant again – if you ever even got your food.
That’s what AI does every time you give it a task without tools. ESPECIALLY if you’re using an agentic system like Claude Code, OpenCode, Hermes, OpenClaw, etc. You’re burning thousands and thousands of tokens over and over again to reinvent the wheel every single time a task runs.
Here’s a concrete example. Suppose you wanted your AI to talk to your Jira ticketing system. Jira has an MCP service and connector – but if you watch carefully when your AI is using it, you’ll also see it drafting Python scripts from time to time to work with the connector.
That’s pure waste.
If your AI system knows that the Jira command line interface (a text-based app also known as a CLI) is available? It can open up that program, run it, and use almost no tokens at all.
Andy Crestodina and I were talking about sustainability recently, and I said that using deterministic software like CLI tools is one of the best ways to make AI more sustainable. The less it reinvents the wheel, the fewer resources it consumes – AND the better the results you get from it, because when a tool like a CLI runs, there’s a clear right and wrong output.
Let AI do what it does best, and let purpose-built tools do what they do best. You’ll get the most out of AI by using it as little as possible.
