8 hours.
That’s how long the new version of Zhipu AI’s (aka ZAI) flagship model, GLM-5.1, is capable of working autonomously and still cranking out high quality results.
ZAI trained ths new model entirely on Huawei Ascend chips, not an NVIDIA GPU in sight. This is China’s leading chip maker for AI, and the benchmarks for GLM-5.1 are impressive – on par with Gemini 3.1, GPT-5.4, and Opus 4.6.
In their own lab tests, GLM-5.1 was able to do autonomous tasks with a high degree of accuracy for about 8 hours. That places it somewhere between Claude Opus 4.5 and 4.6 in terms of task completion horizons – that’s a damn good showing, since Opus 4.6 is the leader at the moment and this open weights Chinese model is a reasonable second place.
Here’s the zinger: as with so many Chinese origin models, GLM-5.1 is downloadable for free. If you have the hardware to run it – and it requires a LOT, it’s a 744B-A40B model, so larger than DeepSeek – then you can run it yourself for the cost of electricity alone.
Think about what that means. If Anthropic closed its doors tomorrow, if OpenAI ran out of money, if Google added a zero to your AI bill, you would still have access to state of the art (SOTA) AI from a Chinese lab. If you’ve made AI a competitive advantage over the last couple of years, you could continue that advantage while people who weren’t in the know about ALL the other SOTA models in the world stood at the water cooler in tears.
One of the things I dinged every AI conference I went to last year on was a complete willful ignorance of AI outside the USA. In today’s highly uncertain environment and geopolitical landscape, that’s hubris in the truly Greek tragedy way. You should know what’s out there, from Mistral in France to EXAONE in Korea to Cohere in Canada to GLM-5.1 and Minimax and Qwen from China. Despite Silicon Valley’s wishes to the contrary, AI is not any one country’s hegemony play.

In the meantime, GLM-5.1 is the latest arrow in the quiver for AI folks to have on hand. Smart as Claude means on those days when Claude goes down, you have a backup you can fail over to immediately (make sure you’re using an inference provider compatible with your data privacy needs).
