Summary
In today's episode, I explain how to run multi-agent AI loops without incurring massive API costs. Here's what this means for you. You can scale agentic workflows while keeping your technology expenditures predictable and low. You'll also learn these concepts: how local hosting offers a cost-free alternative for specific tasks, why token-based subscription plans outperform standard API pricing, and how an agentic harness drives the success of your system.
Key Takeaways
- You'll learn how hosting mid-size models locally eliminates per-token API costs
- You'll discover how subscription plans provide massive savings compared to traditional API pricing
- You'll see why selecting a capable agentic harness matters as much as the model itself

In today's episode, wow asks, how do you orchestrate a multi-agent debate loop without running up a giant API bill? I am terrified that my AI will get stuck in an endless loop and just pass massive blocks of text back and forth running up a giant bill. What's the best way to use? Um, don't use a agentic system that that uses API expensive APIs. So there's two options to work around this.
Number one is host the model yourself. If you've got a decent enough computer, um you can host models like Quen 3.5, um NemoTron from Nvidia. There's so many really good models now that if you're doing things like product focus groups and debate, you do not need the world's smartest model. You need something that's fluent at language and can has a good size context window, and um is is optimized for language as opposed to coding. Um I wouldn't use like Quinn 3.5 coder, but I would use something like GLM47 Flash or Quen 3.5 or any of those that are you know mid-size models.
We're talking between nine and 30 billion parameters, and have the system work that way. That is the completely cost-free way to do that. It will be slow, and boy, will your fans spin on your computer when you're doing that. But it will, other than the cost of electricity, it will get the job done for you. That's option one.
Option two is there's two different kinds of subscription models now in the AI space. Uh, there is the API, and then there's what are called coding plans. So this is an example. This would be Claude Max from Anthropic, where you spend $200 a month and you get uh usage limits instead of token costs. So you'll you'll get uh a certain amount of token usage every five hours and then per week.
That is a massive money saver. Um, anthropic, when they do this, they are running these systems at a significant loss in many ways. Uh exchange because if you keep a system like Claude running and productive 24 hours a day, which you can do with Claude Cowork and stuff. You can give it big chunks of tasks before you go home for the day, and then it works on them overnight. Someone did a study about January of 2026 saying that the actual API costs, if you did the same tasks by API, would be more than 10 times as expensive.
So Anthropic is one of many companies that has these coding plans. Just because it says coding doesn't mean you have to use it for code, right? So that's that's kind of one of the secrets about this stuff. You can use these agentic systems for any task inside of the system like Claude Cowork, Open Work, et cetera, uh, anti-gravity, et cetera. The token plans are dirt cheap by comparison.
So our primary token plan that we use uh at Trust Insights is the Claude one, Claude Max. Our secondary that I actually use as my primary now, believe it or not, is from a company called Minimax. They are a Chinese AI company that has offices in both um the People's Republic of China itself and in Singapore. If you are an international user, you work with the Singapore office, which obeys Singapore data privacy policies and laws. Uh so your data is commercially safe there.
And their costs are so much lower than Anthropex for a model, uh Minimax M2.7 that is as smart as the previous generation of Claude. So Claude Opus 4.6 is currently the smartest commercially available uh model for anthropic and it is generally regarded as one of the best AI models out there. Minimax is as smart as Claude Opus 4.5, the previous version that was the sort of the best things in sliced bread up until January of 2026. So for one twelfth of the cost, you can get essentially last month's model, not last year's model, but last month's model, and be very, very productive, especially if you're doing stuff that is pretty routine commonplace, right? If you're not trying to do crazy stuff like cure cancer, which people have done with AI.
Um, but if you're just doing marketing things in particular, uh, the Minimax model on their token plan is a super value, and you can plug it into a system like open work, for example, that is an agentic harness for business uses, it's basically a competitor to Claude Co-Work, and get Claude Cowork style results from a much much cheaper and uh very capable model. So that's that's how you orchestrate these systems. You you find a good harness because the harness matters almost as much as the actual model. You find a great model that is affordable, that could that meets your budget, and then off you go. So that's the answer.
