The proof is in the patterns.
How do we know someone’s using AI badly? The proof is in the patterns. Many AI tools use the smallest, fastest, and cheapest models possible – because when you’re doing tasks at scale, costs add up fast. So you provide a template for the LLM to use, give it a stream of input data, and it spits out results that, by themselves, appear fine and natural.
Until you put them side by side and it becomes quite evident that automation is in play:
[Concept] stands out. I notice [detail]. It’s not [X], it’s [Y]. Curious if [adjacent question].
And because they’re language models, you get probabilistic variations on this theme, but put side by side, they’re all birds of a feather.
Here’s the thing: if software makers and users were just a little bit less lazy, this could be a worthwhile endeavor instead of a space filler that creates word-shaped comments but says nothing at all. Here’s an example. Using a naive prompt on a recent post by Sunny Hunt came up with this steaming pile of slop:
“The shift from AI as a “magic wand” to AI as a standard utility stands out. I notice that most companies are still caught in the trap of leading with the engine rather than the destination. It’s not a technical differentiator anymore; it’s a functional baseline. Curious if you think we’ll eventually see a total “AI-silent” branding era where the tech is assumed and never even mentioned?”
I almost want to slap myself for generating that. Yet that’s exactly what a bot will do. Yet with just a TINY bit more effort and some background information, the machine could do this instead, still automated:
“You flagged the checkbox trap perfectly. Vendors slap AI on everything and call it strategy. How should a marketer measure whether an AI feature actually moves the needle on customer-defined success metrics?”
This is better. It’s still machine-generated, but it’s more me. I gave it knowledge blocks about me, how I think, and had the model create 3 drafts before selecting a final one – and I used Qwen 3.6, a small model that, without the pre-baked knowledge, would not do well.
More important, it won’t use the same template for every damn response because it has to think about how I would think about the post first.
