Unlocking AI-Powered Productivity: How to Glue CLI Tools Together and Build Your Own Automated Workflows

Start gluing the pieces together with AI.

With the advent of agentic AI, more and more command line tools are becoming available to us. These tools, which run in a text-based terminal that looks like it’s straight out of the Reagan years, offer API-like access to our favorite applications that AI like Codex, Antigravity, Claude Code, and many others can use. They literally generate the text commands to control the software.

Humans can use them too, especially if you’re old like me and you grew up with that black and green monochrome monitor connected to an Apple II+ in your school. But their power really is best used by AI.

The power move for all of us is to start seeing these as little Lego-like building blocks. Instead of treating each tool as its own thing, we should see it as a brick in a much larger building.

Here’s an example, borrowing from what A. Lee Judge built a couple of years ago but wasn’t fully automated – creating podcasts using NotebookLM. He came up with a great implementation that still had humans involved, but today that workflow can be completely run by a basic script.

I built a script in Qwen Code that took all the emails I get from Aleyda Solís’ excellent SEOFOMO newsletter, extract them with the gws CLI (Google Workspace Command Line Interface), clean them up with Python on the command line, pass them to NotebookLM programmatically with the notebookLM-MCP-CLI in a new notebook, generate the audio files with NotebookLM, then download them from NotebookLM. In just a few minutes, MP3s just show up on my hard drive with no intervention from me.

This process is fully automated. Because it’s a standard Python script, it could even run on a schedule. What makes it work is gluing blocks of utilities together.

The explosion of these building blocks means less reinventing the wheel for all of us. Your homework is to look at what systems you use today, see what CLI utilities have been built in your area of focus, and rather than try to build from scratch, take the existing pieces and start gluing them together. You’ll get to productivity much faster.
