Are you a V-shaped professional?
For years, management consultants batted around the concept of the T-shaped professional, the T-shaped marketer. Surface-level knowledge for most things, really good at one thing.
You might be an email marketing wizard, and have surface knowledge of organic search, direct mail, Google Ads, etc. but you couldn’t reasonably do those other disciplines. You knew they existed, but you couldn’t pinch-hit for any of them with any level of competence.
Generative AI changes that equation substantially. Properly used, AI gives you a minimum level of competence in everything. Music composition? Suno can create competent music. Is it great? No. Is it good enough, especially for that backing track to your YouTube video? Yes. Any coding agent can connect to Revit MCP and allow you to design and architect a building with prompts. Will you be the next IM Pei? Probably not. Can you reliably design a garden shed? Yes.
Think about the things required of, say, an email marketer. Not just writing emails, but:
- Graphic design and layout
- Psychology of email marketing
- DNS protocols like DKIM, SPF, DMARC, and BIMI
- Email software providers and marketing automation software
- Postmaster tools and MX toolbox diagnosis
- APIs for services like Amazon Simple Email Service
- Color theory
- HTML5 and embeds, CSS, Tailwind, and other frameworks
In the past, you might be great at the writing or design part, but the rest? That was someone else’s job on the team, if you were lucky enough to have a team.
Today? AI can be the rest of that team. Screenshot your DNS records and put them into Copilot and have it help you craft SPF and DKIM records or troubleshoot them. Have Gemini render videos and GIF animations to make your emails come alive. Connect Claude Code to all your system APIs and have it evaluate how well your entire email marketing infrastructure is set up. Give NotebookLM the latest psychology and design research, then plug that into Gemini to critique your campaigns.
Your area of expertise becomes the point of the V, but everything else comes along with it because AI is backstopping you, being your support system for all the things that you know about, but don’t necessarily have expertise in. Properly prompted and supplied with correct data, you can be an entire email marketing team.
And so much knowledge is transferable. Suppose your web designer is in Tahiti for two weeks. Previously, you’d have to wait till they got back. Today, you can pinch hit, especially if your documentation is great. (brand standards, templates, etc.) For example, Katie Robbert is not a graphic designer by trade. She’s a CEO. We hired a great graphic designer, Pete Buhler, to create a brand standards guide, and now Katie can use that with Claude Cowork to create great, brand-aligned, professional looking content any time she wants.
So much more is within your reach with AI as your backstop. Push beyond the boundaries of what you’ve always been able to do into what else you could be doing with AI helping you.
