NotebookLM in Gemini is the money.
Here’s what I mean. Google’s Gemini 3.1 is a crazy smart model, especially the pro version. But even with a 1 million token context window (short term working memory that can hold about 750,000 words), it can’t remember everything.
But not too long ago, Google enabled NotebookLM notebooks as a data source in Gemini 3. Now, that huge collection of curated data that you’ve been putting in NotebookLM is available as a data source for Gemini to work with.
And let me tell you friends, it is GOOD.
“But why would you do this when you can prompt in NotebookLM?” Three reasons.
-
NotebookLM constrains prompt length. It’s around 4,000 characters. With Gemini, you can put much longer prompts.
-
Gemini also allows you to invoke other tools like web search and Python code right from inside the chat (you have to tell it to do that but it can). NotebookLM can’t do that.
-
NotebookLM’s default model is Gemini 3 Flash Thinking, which is smart, but not as smart as Gemini 3.1 Pro. If you have especially tough questions, you want the full power of Gemini 3.1 Pro.
For example, I’m in the middle of a project right now for a client. The primary data sources total 672,000 lines of data. It’s about 6 million words. NotebookLM can handle that, to be sure. But having Gemini 3.1’s extensive thinking, longer prompts, and additional tools means I can do significantly better analysis with NotebookLM acting as the database and Gemini acting as the brain.
And bonus, you can use NotebookLM data sources in more than just the chat. You can build them into Gems, for example, and have that second brain/digital twin you’ve been wanting.
