The Essential AI Maintenance Habit: Why ‘What Can We Remove?’ Is the Most Important Question You’re Not Asking

It is just as important to remove as it is to add.

This is 10x true if you’re working with agentic AI on… well, anything, but ESPECIALLY code.

Agentic AI loves to create. It loves to write. It has a tendency – like the humans it trained on – to do band-aid fixes on things, play whack-a-mole with bugs, and do as little as possible.

No joke, anyone who’s ever forced a code review with the AI of your choice, it’ll come back saying “your developer failed to do X, Y, and Z and left stubs and mocks for these functions. And you’re like… YOU ARE THE DEVELOPER, YOU OVERGROWN TIN CAN.

Code, like any creation, eventually becomes unmaintainable without proper maintenance. The same is true for any large work; consistency and continuity is hard.

Which means that you have to build in that maintenance. You have to build in cycles not of creation or repair, but removal. There are some tools that can help with this (in Python, radon and xenon are your BFFs) by telling you what’s become an overgrown weed patch.

But YOU have to be the one to ask for maintenance. You have to ask AI, “okay, what can we safely remove today, if anything? What can we simplify, if anything? What’s overengineered given our requirements, if anything?” (this is the prompt)

If you never think to ask, AI will just keep adding chewing gum, duct tape, and baling wire in a never-ending ball, until you need a machete to fix things, or you just pitch the thing in the bin and start over.

Just as you shower, just as you brush your teeth, you should be running regular removal cycles in your AI creations, because otherwise bad hygiene creeps in, and once it sets, it’s very difficult to fix.
