As budgets get tighter and AI gets ever smarter, one thing to keep in mind for your company, from solopreneur to enterprise, is that there may be an option to roll your own software, whatever the software is.
For decades, hobbyists in the open source community have created incredibly capable pieces of software that mirror their commercial counterparts, from GA alternatives like Matomo to Hubspot alternatives like Mautic to CRM alternatives like SugarCRM.
And while those packages are highly capable, a lot of companies opted for commercial software – more polished, more features, more support. And that made total sense.
In the era of tools like Claude Code, Jules, Github Copilot, etc. it might – MIGHT – make less sense. Why? Because with open source repositories plus tools like Claude Code, you can remix or add to existing software to make it your own.
Need a feature it doesn’t have? Ask yuor favorite AI tool to build it, or expand on an existing feature.
Want something lighter and faster? Ask your favorite AI to identify the features you don’t need and archive/deprecate them.
Many open source packages are permissively licensed, even for commercial use. And support is a chat away – the same AI tools that can modify code can also answer any question about the software right from inside the codebase with incredible accuracy. They can tell you step by step how to do something by reading the source code – and if it turns out the open source software can’t do that, then you ask for a modification.
Yes, there are hurdles, such as hosting it, securing it, and maintaining it. Yes, you are trading money for time and effort. But if you have a hard budget constraint you just can’t overcome, this is another way to get where you need to go.
