Here’s why agentic AI matters, in a word: parallelism.
All of the tasks agentic AI does, regular AI also does (because logically, agentic AI is built on top of regular AI).
And the tasks that you’d do with agents, you can absolutely do in serial, one at a time, one after another. It’ll work. It’ll be slow, onerous, and labor intensive, but it’ll work.
What AI agents bring to the table is the ability to do those same tasks autonomously, but more importantly, in parallel.
In my newsletter this weekend, I showed a ridiculous example of using Claude Code’s subagents to simultaneously edit 32 chapters of an AI-generated trashy romance novel. Each agent took on a chapter, editing, proofing, and fixing it up. Could I have done that manually, one at a time? Yes. But the combined amount of time it took the sub-agents to do that was 32 agents x 15 minutes each. The editnig was done in about 15 minutes after all was said and done.
That’s 480 minutes – 8 hours – of labor done in parallel. Copying and pasting, doing things one at a time would have taken the full 8 hours. Doing it in parallel dramatically reduced the time and got to the same quality result.
Whether it’s Antigravity, Claude Code, Zapier, n8n, etc. (the list is endless), the big mind shift is understanding what can be parallelized and what can’t be. Knowing what’s upstream and downstream of what you’re working on, knowing where there are and aren’t dependencies.
When you change your mindset from “do this then that” to “do all this at once”, you open up incredible possibilities for getting more done faster without sacrificing quality or your sanity.
