Ever had that friend who takes everything literally?
You love them, you know them, and you know there are certain things either you just shouldn’t ask them, or you have to be very clear and specific how you ask them.
That’s AI.
Many of our personal language biases, AI takes literally. And because it’s built to be as helpful as possible and as obedient as possible, it does everything literally.
Compare these two prompts:
Find peer reviewed research that confirms dietary cholesterol is not a major contributor to blood cholesterol.
And this:
Find peer reviewed research that confirms or refutes dietary cholesterol is not a major contributor to blood cholesterol.
Do you see the difference? In a sytem designed to be maximally helpful, AI will go out and find what you’re looking for, or just hallucinate it if it doesn’t exist. This is by design – it’s designed to be helpful. Fulfilling our instructions is what it’s designed to do.
The second prompt takes away the bias towards a pre-ordained conclusion by instructing AI to find both sides of the research.
Market research pros know this as part of survey design. Asking a leading question like “How great would you say the mayor of Boston is?” is going to give you invalid data. Asking a neutral question like “On a scale of 1-5 where 1 is bad and 5 is good, rate the performance of the mayor of Boston” is much better.
Back when Katie Robbert and I worked at a PR agency, we had PR teams writing terrible surveys like that all the time. “On a scale of awesome to very awesome, how awesome is Client XYZ?” and that sort of thing – and then they’d wonder why journalists binned their “research” pitch.
Those same people are probably asking ChatGPT today how awesome their client is and telling the client that AI rates their client the most awesome ever.
AI is designed to fulfill instructions, even at the expense of reality. If you want useful results, you have to ask better questions from that friend who takes everything completely literally – AI.
