AI Podcasts Are Dead: How I Spent 3 Hours Listening to Custom Content Built Just for Me

I listened to no podcasts today on my drive.

You’re probably like, “And?”

Normally when I do long distance drives, I catch up on podcasts. Today, I didn’t. Today, I listened to the NotebookLM summaries of papers I needed to catch up on, advanced AI papers from NeurIPS that I didn’t understand well.

Over the period of a 6 hour drive, I listened to close to 3 hours of NotebookLM’s Deep Dives. They’re not perfect – the hosts often mix up who’s supposed to be speaking, and occasionally you get a Max Headroom stutter or garbled sound, but those are few and far between.

Instead of 3 hours of listening for 1.5 hours of content (minus sponsor messages, irrelevant banter, etc.), I got 3 hours of personalized content just for me. I learned 4 new advanced prompt engineering techniques, the architecture of a new type of AI, and a bunch of other stuff that I’m working on.

How? NotebookLM is a wrapper – a very clever, incredibly valuable wrapper – around Google Gemini. Today, it’s powered by Gemini 3 Flash, literally the smartest model on the market for its size. Which means if you know how to prompt Gemini 3 well (it’s VERY finicky about conflicting instructions, for example), NotebookLM can be a powerhouse content creator.

The “episodes” I listened to today were the podcast I’ve always wanted, tailored expressly to me, using my ridiculous food analogies (because that’s how I learn best, through analogy), focused on exactly what I wanted to hear about, derived from the highest quality source materials – research papers from the big labs.

This is something Joe Pulizzi, Robert Rose, and I have been talking about for over a year now. Joe asked me at MarketingProfs B2B Forum how long content creators have before the clock runs out and AI starts taking their audiences – a year? Three years? I said zero years. The day of nearly instant, perfectly tailored content is here, now.

Unless your content provides me with something original that I can’t get anywhere else, NotebookLM provides the highest quality content I want, made just for me with no ads, no sponsors, no filler. And the barrier to entry for any audience member is more or less zero – just drop in great sources and get great outputs.

It’s hard to compete with “made JUST for me, EXACTLY the way I want it”. To do so, creators and marketers have to provide value that audiences can’t get anywhere else.
