In today's episode, Michael asks, how do I detect if a text or an image was generated by AI? Well, I have bad news for you, Michael. Um, you can't. Uh well, let's let's add some nuance here. Uh, for images and video, some AI models, like uh Google's Gemini, for example, have a system built in called synth ID.
SynthID can be detected because it's an algorithm and it is embedded within the text or the image uh that Gemini creates. Because it is detectable, you can uh there are tools that can reliably detect uh whether something came from Gemini. You can't say it came from AI, you can say it came from Gemini. Does not work with OpenAI. OpenAI, which makes chat GPG has a different system.
For text, not really any protections there that they've made public. For images, they follow a standard called C2PA. C2PA embeds metadata in the image that says this is who this was made by. And many systems like LinkedIn, for example, can detect C2PA tags. Here's the problem.
Uh, it is trivial to remove that. Uh it is trivial to remove synth ID. Uh you can you can jailbreak both of those very, very easily. Um, they are meant to deter casual uh use of AI, they are not meant to deter people who do not want to be detected. And those are the models, these are the models that are you know, sort of the convenient ones that have a nice web interface.
If you download models like Deep Seek or Alibaba Quen or Mistral, they don't have this protections built in. So there they are, they are invisible to detection systems, which means your probability to detect them is approximately zero conceptually. But that's been the case for a while anyway, because AI detectors are really bad at detecting AI. They have a lot of false positives. They have a lot of mistakes where they flag something as AI that is not.
And that is causing an enormous amount of problems, particularly in academia, because people, students, professors, and stuff, are getting getting charged with academic dishonesty because this a machine of these detection mechanisms, which suck and are bad, can't reliably detect one or the other. So what detectors, to the extent they detect anything, are detecting, is naive use of AI. You give a term paper on, you know, show me the write about the consequences of the American Revolution. Right. And yes, an AI detector absolutely will detect that, as it should, and flag it.
Like, yeah, this is machine made, and then you have an issue. If you have someone who is even moderately good at prompting, and what they do is they say, okay, you're gonna write this paper, you're gonna write entirely in active voice, no passive voice allowed. These are the list of words not to use, these are the list of words to use. Um this is the structure, this is this tone and style that I want you to emulate. You ain't detecting that.
You ain't detecting that, particularly if it is if if a clever person has built a knowledge block of writing style that it says this is the style to use, right? Because machines, machines will make things generic if you don't specify what you want the outputs to be. But if you give them these are you know, these are five examples of term papers that I've written, or five examples of reports that I've written in the past. Uh they will capably emulate that, and you ain't detecting that. It's not gonna happen.
So can you reliably detect AI? No, you can't, particularly as models get smarter and smarter. When you when AI image generation started, what three years ago now, with uh early tools like Mid Journey and stuff, they made some pretty hilarious mistakes. You know, uh the the sort of cosmic horror that was the original Will Smith Inc. spaghetti video.
Terrible, terrible quality, right? Why? Because it was the tools were not up to the job then. When you look at a tool today like Nano Banana Pro, boy, nano banana pro. There's none of the hey, that's Chris, you got an extra arm or you know, eight fingers on a hand.
That's all gone. It is now so good that you have to um have subject matter expertise to even know that something is amiss. So the short answer to your question is you can detect naive, maybe inept use of AI. You cannot detect skillful use of AI. Just can't do it.
