Mastering AI: How High-Quality Context Drives Better Results

OpenAI recently published a gigantic prompt library as examples for people to get started with AI.

What’s the one thing in common with the vast majority of examples?

They specify the need for context. Lots of context. The prompts themselves are incredibly generic, but clearly made to not overwhelm a beginner.

Here’s an example:

Write a daily update summarizing key rep activities. Inputs: [paste call summaries or CRM exports]. Make it upbeat and concise. Output as 3–5 bullet message.

You’ll note a general absence of solid guidance here, which is okay for a complete novice. What IS there is the need for call summaries and CRM exports.

Here’s another example:

Create an account plan for [customer name]. Use these inputs: company profile, known priorities, current product usage, stakeholders, and renewal date. Output a structured plan with goals, risks, opportunities, and next steps.

Look how much data you’re expected to provide.

Here’s why: today’s reasoning models are smart enough to infer a fair amount even from an absolute crap prompt. What they can’t do is successfully infer your data, your specifics. If you get THAT right, then AI will do a reasonable job of working with that data, extracting useful stuff from it (assuming it’s in a format it can read).

Winning at AI today and going forward, as I say in my keynotes, is a matter of who has the best ideas, insights, and data. These are the 3Cs of AI: creativity, critical thinking, and CONTEXT.

Who has the most, best data wins.
