How to Spot and Defeat the “Right Problem, Wrong Solution” Manipulation Tactic That’s Everywhere

Right problem, wrong solution.

This is one of the most manipulative tricks we have at our disposal today, and you see it everywhere – in sales techniques (the Challenger Sales ‘reframe’), in politics, in media.

It’s a brain hijack, and it’s one you have to be super careful of because it’s so effective. Here’s how it works. A bad actor starts with a known problem and digs into it with factually correct, observable, verifiable claims.

This establishes immediate credibility, especially if it aligns with your world view.

What they know, and what we forget, is that fact checking, like any effort, happens unevenly. We fact check hardest up front, and once something passes a few rounds, we back off because it’s mentally time consuming to keep doing it.

So a thorough, detailed, visceral, and clear analysis of the problem uses up our “fact-checking mental budget”… leaving us vulnerable when they inevitably produce a solution that’s wrong.

Here are just a few examples:

B2B:
– Problem: Your SaaS bills are out of hand. (right)
– Solution: Buy our SaaS bill consolidation service. (wrong)

Social:
– Problem: Homelessness is a safety hazard both for the housed and unhoused. (right)
– Solution: Criminalize homelessness. (wrong)

Medicine:
– Problem: Our overall health is bad and declining. (right)
– Solution: restrict access to vaccines and make everyone eat beef tallow. (wrong)

So how do we prevent this? The straightforward answer would be to conserve our fact-checking mental budget – and one of the ways to do that is to use AI.

There’s a trend, for good or ill, to incorporate AI into everything, make it ubiquitous. We can and should use that technology to assist our brain budget for fact checking. The screenshot to this post shows exactly what that looks like.

We might not have the mental bandwidth to fact check everything. AI, properly prompted, does – especially if we’re specific in our prompts to use the highest quality information available to us.

If AI has to be everywhere and in every product, then let’s put it to work guarding our own minds against manipulative tactics used by people who put their interests ahead of ours.
