How AI is Changing Jobs and Why Your Retirement Advice Needs an Update

What advice do you need to retire?

As conference season ramps back up, I’m updating slide decks and talking points – and finding some dinosaurs that were correct once upon a time, but now need to be put out to pasture.

Here’s one about video generation. I used to say that video generation can’t handle scene changes; avatars couldn’t mimic that level of complexity.

That’s out of date now. Sora 2 can EASILY do major scene changes while preserving the main character. My default has been a bright orange construction helmet (I actually have one) that I’d put on. Sora can nail that now, so that advice, about proving the authenticity of a video, is now defunct.

Here’s another popular one I used to say back in 2022 that I retired in 2024, but I still hear people saying: “AI won’t take your job, someone skilled with AI will.” Nope. AI will absolutely take your job now, in one of three ways:

  • Outright consumption. For highly repetitive jobs, AI is already devouring them whole.
  • Deskilling. For jobs where we cognitively offloading, like basic content creation, AI consumes the task and deskills the worker, making them less valuable. Derek Guy on Threads (@die_workwear) said something that’s stuck with me for days now: all automation (of any kind) deskills a worker by transforming them from artisan to cog.
  • Devaluation. AI takes high value skills and depletes what a worker can earn for those skills. A junior software developer who could earn 60K a year is demoted to overseeing an AI agent that works for 2400 a year, and thus you can pay the junior developer less or eliminate the position entirely and have a senior developer just babysit AI.

AI continues to make astounding leaps in capability. As it changes, so too should our advice about it.

Video completely fake, generated by Sora 2.
