AI Security Breakthrough: Why Your Prompts Aren’t Really at Risk

“You can reconstruct any prompt according to a new paper!”

There’s a strain of panic currently on Threads right now about a new paper that talks about how researchers were able to precisely reconstruct a prompt based on how an AI model behaved.

Panic time has ensued by a bunch of people who either have not read the paper or don’t know what it means. Lots and lots of people hyperventilating about it.

What the paper REALLY says is that if you observe the model in action, you can correctly reconstruct the prompt. But you can’t reconstruct it from the result alone.

Here’s an analogy. Suppose you want to uncover a pizza parlor’s secret recipe for their pizza. You can’t figure it out from the finished pizza alone. So you install a security camera that takes a photo every 5 seconds in the kitchen. From that series of photos you can reverse engineer the recipe by watching what the chefs do.

That’s what the paper says. So who can do this? Whoever is controlling the infrastructure around the model – and that usually means Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, etc… who have no need to do this because they can already see what you prompt.

Is the paper interesting? Yes. Is it a cause for alarm? Absolutely not. No rando is going to reverse engineer your prompts from your outputs – that’s not what the paper says.

Just so we’re clear.

Link to the paper in the comments so you can inspect the original.
