One of the top skills in an AI-forward world? Asking good questions.
Not too long ago, Rebecca Bultsma introduced me to what looked like an interesting piece of software that did near real-time transcription using the microphone on your Mac and transcribing it right into the text box where you’re typing it.
That looked super handy. I checked it out and found that it has an eye-popping price tag of $249. Then I looked under the hood to see what was powering it: it’s basically a wrapper of whisper.cpp (a free, open-source project) with a nice UI.
So last night I sat down and asked Gemini Deep Research about the product and its underlying architecture and how we could make a better version of it, making it my way. We went back and forth asking and answering questions, looking at the different automatic speech recognition models that are available to us for free, settling on parakeet-mlx because it’s the best model optimized for the Mac.
30 minutes later, I had a deep research report with recommended Python libraries and I popped over to Claude Code and asked it to start coding, following the requirements document and work plan and coding standards that I provided it.
Two hours later, I had an MVP. This morning, I’m writing this LinkedIn post with it. Did I do any of the actual coding? No, I did not. Did I do all of the actual thinking? I sure did. And what sets you apart in an AI forward world is not whether you can code or speak different languages or create brilliant content, but your ability to ask good questions and create good ideas.
AI is the great skill leveler. It takes your ideas and brings them to life. So what sets you apart in the age of AI is not whether you can use the tools so much as whether you have great ideas to feed them.
As I say in my keynotes and workshops, whoever has the most, best ideeas will win.
