How to Stay Authentic in the Age of AI: Why Imperfection Makes You Human

What is “authentic” in an AI era when AI can capably simulate us?

If you log into any avatar creator like HeyGen, you’ll see all sorts of options like gesture replication to make your AI avatars even more realistic.

Folks who don’t follow the AI space closely don’t realize just how good digital clones can be.

So what do you do when you want to convey authenticity, that it’s really you? A couple of things:

  1. Change your environment. Add in content that AI would find exceptionally difficult to replicate, like changing background scenery and things that normally would be stuff you’d want to omit. Perfectly polished backgrounds and static talking head shots are the domain of AI now.
  2. Leave your minor mistakes in. Leave in those odd moments like when the dog wanders into the background, or you get tied up on a tongue twister. As long as you’re not conveying factually incorrect information, leave the mistakes and oddities in.

Over the weekend, I was shooting some of my weekday YouTube videos, and I needed to grill some bacon. Doing so well takes about half an hour, so I decided I’d double up – answer your questions for my You Ask, I Answer series while getting my culinary tasks out of the way.

I had a halfway decent wireless mic connected to my phone (and did further audio cleanup in Adobe Podcast), so the audio quality was going to be fine, something I learned from David Tames back in 2007. People will tolerate incredibly bad video if the audio is good.

More important, it conveys a sense of authenticity in a way no AI system is trained for. Half the time, I’m not even looking at the camera. The dog is wandering around. There’s laundry in the background. A random plant occasionally blows in frame from the breeze.

But it’s unquestionably me.

As we abstract away more and more to AI, double down on the things that are unquestionably you. Let the messy background be seen. Keep the trivial mistakes in. Perfection and polish are more and more the domain of the machines, whereas character-conveying mistakes are more and more who we are.

And as a bonus, when someone meets you in person, there will be no cognitive dissonance at all. Who you are, mistakes and all, will be in perfect harmony.
