Claude Sonnet 4.5’s Game-Changing Feature: Context Editing for Smarter AI Conversations

Claude Sonnet 4.5 changes a lot of things, but this one thing is a MASSIVE change that the nerd herd (people like me) will deeply appreciate:

Context editing.

One of the largest problems with generative AI over long conversations is that is that the short term memory, the context window, gets polluted over time. It gets filled up with stuff, and as time goes on and your conversation in a single chat gets longer, the model loses coherence. It runs into conflicting statements. It has lots of stuff that may not be relevant to the immediate task at hand.

Sonnet 4.5 changes that with a technique called context editing, where the model and the engine around it prune the context window before it gets full to free up memory by removing older parts of the conversation. For those who remember hard drives from years gone by, you may remember functions like defrag, defragmenting your hard drive.

Everything old is new again. Context editing is essentially the same concept, ported to AI. Instead of preserving every possible detail in the conversation, Sonnet four point five selectively removes less relevant past information in the chat behind the scenes to free up memory.

This will improve coherence and improve performance by having fewer distracting tokens from earlier in the conversation, impacting the tasks that you’re working on now. It’s a really, really big deal.

Combined with the new memories tool, which many developers have been using through MCPs, and Sonnet 4.5 is going to be a major productivity booster for everyone, but especially developers and coders.
