AI Won’t Show Your Business If You Hide Your Pricing—Here’s Why

This is a gentle reminder to everyone who has a commercial website without pricing on it.

When someone asks ChatGPT/Gemini/AI the following:

“Hey ChatGPT, I’m looking to hire a new PR agency. I’m specifically looking to get in with influencers, Substacks, and local press/trade press. Of these, Substacks are my highest priority so the agency MUST have specific experience with reaching Substack publishers. I’d like them to be in the Boston area, and my budget is about 2500/month. Restrict your results to agencies that can work 2500 a month or under. Can you find me some good agencies that meet all these criteria?”

Guess who won’t be in the results?

Yeah, you. The company that says “Please call for pricing” or “Request a demo” or “Contact Sales”.

That has no pricing on your site.

You no longer make the short list. You’re not even in the consideration set any more because AI is trying to fulfill the user’s intent – and you aren’t.

“But our pricing is custom!”

Join the club. But you surely have minimums, right? Pricing starts at X and goes up from there? You won’t work for 20 bucks an hour when your average fee is 5 grand, will you?

Put aside all the GEO/AEO/AIO/EIEIO crap for a moment, which based on what I see on LinkedIn is about 90% snake oil (it’s mostly just rebranded SEO with an extra 0 on the price, be honest).

Does your website – which AI tools all know how to read and reference – actually and honestly answer the real questions that your buyers have?

If not, that’s the AI optimization you really need to do.

Go to your customer service inbox. Go to your sales inbox, your Zoom transcripts, your CRM, and pull out every sales question you’ve been asked more than 3 times in the last 90 days.

Answer them all in public on your website.

Forget fancy technical tricks that may or may not have a basis in reality. Put up real answers to real questions, and AI will know what to do.

Bonus: so will the humans who make it to your website.

“But our VP/head of sales won’t let us!” Enjoy fewer sales, I guess. And when they are called on the carpet for a shrinking pipeline, lower quality leads, and fewer sales, you can re-explain to them that satisfying the buyer’s intent should have been the mission all along. Information asymmetry – when sales had info and the buyer didn’t – worked in sales back in the Reagan administration. Today, information asymmetry tactics just makes you look clueless.
