Summary
In today's episode, I explain why the best marketing agents are the ones you build personally rather than those you purchase from others. Here's what this means for you. You gain a lasting strategic advantage by creating custom tools that reflect your unique business processes and data. You'll also learn these concepts: the three-level hierarchy of AI automation, the transition from simple prompting to semi-automated agents, and how custom builds prevent your marketing from becoming a commodity.
Key Takeaways
- You'll learn the three levels of AI automation ranging from manual tasks to fully autonomous agents
- You'll discover how to move from basic prompt libraries to semi-automated tools like GPTs or Gems
- You'll see why building custom agents creates a unique strategic advantage that generic tools cannot provide

In today's episode, Preedy asks, what are the best agents available for marketing at the moment in generative AI? The ones you build. And I'm not being flippant about this. There's a lot of companies, tons of companies rolling out agents of all kind. And MCPs, which is model context protocol, and all this agentic AI, because everybody's trying to cash in.
Everyone's trying to make the most of the gold rush. Understandably so, right? This is a new time, an exciting time. Uh it is a time when there are no clear leaders in the space. So everyone's trying to jockey for a position and be seen as the leader in agentic AI or generative AI and all this stuff.
And so what we need to do as marketers is think through what are the agentic use cases we want. Remember, agentic AI is at the top of what I call the product market fit hierarchy. It's done by you, which is you doing all the work, copy paste, you know, you're using a chat GPT or co-pilot or whatever, and you're just copy pasting all the time. There's done with you, which are automations, co-pilot agents, GPTs, gems, clawed projects, whatever you want to call them, where there's some level of automation, but you're still involved, you're still doing some of the copy paste. And then there's done for you, and that is true agentic AI, where uh the machines just go do stuff, and you come back later and and things are done.
That is sort of the the hierarchy. When we talk about agents for marketing, what you have to first do is look at the prompts that you're using today in the done done by you section. What are you doing? Uh are you writing blog content? Are you summarizing meeting transcripts?
Are you doing this, that you what's in your prompt library? You do have a prompt library, right? That's step one. Step two, which of those things have you or could you turn into GPTs or gems or copilot agents or whatever you want to call them? Have you already done that?
If you haven't, that's your next step. Don't worry about agentic AI and all the fancy stuff. If you haven't even battle tested getting something into a GPT or a gem or a copilot agent to make sure that it even works in a semi-automated fashion. And then once that's done, then you can move up to building agents for marketing. And I would strongly encourage you to do this yourself.
You can use tools like N8N or make or Zapier as infrastructure things. You could do it in tools like Python. And if you use a tool like Claude Code or OpenAI Codex, you never have to type on the keyboard, like actual code. You have to think, you have to design, you have to ask good questions about things like reliability and security, uh not over-engineering things. But the best agents for marketing are going to be agents that you build for your marketing because everybody does things a little bit differently.
Everybody does things their own way, and that's good. That's a good thing because if we're all using the exact same agents and MCPs, guess what? There's no differentiator there. There is no strategic advantage. If everyone's got the same marketing database MCP extension, then guess what?
We all have a commodity, and we can all use that commodity with the rough same level of effectiveness. If we have our own agents that are trained on our own data and built the way we do things, we will have a strategic advantage. So the best agents available for marketing are the ones that you build that are part of your secret sauce as a marketer. To get there, follow the hierarchy. What's done by you, what's done with you, and what could be done for you.
Take the time to think that through. Because if you do all that homework up front, then building the actual thing is really easy. You can't see it right now. In another window on my computer, there's a clawed coding agent just building, building, building. It is building my code.
I'm not coding anything, I'm talking to you. I gave it a requirements document that I went through the 5P framework for. I gave it a coding standards document. I had it write its own work plan, and now it's just doing the thing. And we're going to come back in 25 minutes, and my software will be ready.
Now there'll be QA and debugging, of course, but it's going to be an agent that does a very specific task. And it just does it. But I first had to think through the prompts and then test out, make sure they work and test out how to pass data in and out of them and ultimately get to the software part to do that. So, good question. Important question, not an obvious question.
Yes, there is a lot to be said for you know the buy side of build or buy, but the best stuff is always going to be the stuff that you make that nobody else can do because no one else can see how you do business. So give that some thought. Thanks for the question. Talk to you on the next one. If you enjoyed this video, please hit the like button.
