For my sustainability-minded friends, Google has some new data. Gemini has some very cool, very good efficiency numbers in terms of environmental impact.
Here’s how much a single prompt costs the environment in Google Gemini:
- 0.24 watt-hours, equal to 9 seconds of watching TV.
- 0.03 grams of CO2, equal to 2 breathes you take
- 0.26 mL of water, about 5 drops
Combine this with their bigger 2025 Sustainability report, which shows Google is at 66% carbon-free emissions and 64% fresh water replenishment from their overall datacenter operations, and you have a very clear picture of very, very efficient AI.
Now, this is ONE provider. This doesn’t look at OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, anyone else besides Google. We have clear evidence that some providers like xAI blatantly and willfully violate regulatory laws, like building 22 unlicensed gas turbines outside Memphis, creating a huge source of NOx emissions.
But it showcases that AI CAN be effective AND efficient, if a company is willing to invest in its infrastructure to make it both. Google has had a long, generally good track record on efficiency, because efficiency saves THEM money. Every watt of power they don’t consume is a watt of power they don’t have to pay for.
And that, in the long term, is what will drive AI sustainability, not because Big Tech inherently cares about the environment, but because AI would prefer smaller bills to larger ones.
