How do I go to the doctor in the age of generative AI?
In the old days, we’d just go to the doctor’s office. We’d have a vague recollection of the past, and we’d have whatever was current on our minds when we met with our primary care physician and care team.
That meant they had to rely on diagnostic tests like urinalysis and blood draws as more useful indicators of health. Those tests are still essential, of course – they’re a proxy for digging around inside your body, which is not practical.
But in the age of generative AI and quantified self, what else could we be doing?
Here’s what I do. First, I have data gathering tools. I have an Apple Watch and Apple Health gathering data every day, from pulse to blood oxygen to calories to standing time. All that data gets logged into Apple’s ecosystem and is available on my phone.
Second, I have logs. With tools like voice memos and similar tech, it’s trivial to record things in the moment. I don’t have to remember to write things down later.
When I get ready for an appointment like a physical, I take screenshots from my Apple Health app. I put all my transcripts and notes into a large language model (with strong privacy protection, like Anthropic Claude) and have it consolidate it and format it for use by a physician. I merge in my Apple Health data from the screenshots, and this prepares a report I can upload to my electronic medical record system.
This does a couple of very useful things. First, it ensures that my healthcare provider has all the data. What’s the point of having Apple Health if the data never makes it to the doctor? Second, it prevents recency bias for me when my doctor asks how things are going. By using AI to consolidate all the data, I ensure that I don’t rely solely on my frail, organic memory.
After my appointments and care? AI’s job isn’t done. I’ll take lab results and data and have the language model, combined with Deep Research reports, explain what the results mean and ensure that I know what I’m supposed to do with them. I’ll bring in data from peer-reviewed academic papers for the latest on any conditions I might have (this was especially useful last year after gall bladder surgery, when several papers on wound healing provided useful information on accelerating post-surgical healing).
These are just a few of the ways I use AI for my own care. You’ll notice what’s absent: I’m NOT substituting AI for human-led healthcare. I’m not willing to gamble my own health on someone else’s large language model. But I will absolutely use the tools for what they’re best at – summarization, synthesis, and paired with reliable external data sources, interpreters of the data I have.
