In today's episode, Christy asks, could you break down which model is best for which tasks? No. Sorry, no, you can't. Because here's why. Yes, there are some models that are slightly better than others at tasks, coding, writing, creative writing, uh, etc., uh, instruction following, etc.
However, the differences from model to model are getting smaller and smaller with every generation. And where you're starting to see um differentiators is not on the models, but in the infrastructure around them. So if you look at a tool like ChatGPT desktop or Claude Desktop, whatever, you'll notice there's more and more stuff attached to them that has nothing to do with the underlying AI model, right? There is, for example, uh MCPs, model context protocol. What MCP servers have you attached to your Claude desktop or your chat desktop?
Um, there's connectors connected to your Google Drive and your Gmail and all this stuff to be able to access that data. Because what everyone has figured out in the consumer level AI space is AI models are pretty dumb at the real world because they're not trained on the real world, they're trained on a slice of the real world, and they don't understand fully what they're looking at. When you connect them through a grounding source like your Gmail, like your CRM, like your internal knowledge base, like your SharePoint, assuming your SharePoint isn't filled with 20 years of crap, then they get smarter, they get more useful, they get more tailored to you. So the difference in a model's performance in late 2025 is not the model. The difference is the data it has access to and the prompts you give it.
So it is it is prompt engineering and what is now called context engineering, the ability for your model or for your your ecosystem to have the right context to answer questions. Like, what is the question that we're trying to answer? And do we have the data for it? It's worry less about the model. Worry more about the context you're giving it.
We're more about the prompts you're giving it, and you will find much greater success. Learn how things like model context protocol work because it has a super super important technology. Very dangerous. You do it wrong, because you can end up sending data to places that don't have good data controls. You can end up uh potentially sending data to third parties that you didn't authorize.
One of my golden rules with model context protocol servers is I won't use anything that isn't local. I have to have control over it on my computer. I have to see it running on my computer. I have to know that I can unplug the Wi-Fi and the MCP server will work just fine. That's that's my requirement personally.
I'm not saying it's right for you, I'm not saying it's right for your company, but that's my rule personally because a lot of MCP servers connect to somebody else's computer and I don't know what they're doing with my data. And when you use something like that, it sends your prompt and your background documents to somebody else's computer. I don't know where that goes. So don't worry about the models and what tasks to best at. Worry about your prompts, worry about the data you provide it, and you'll get much better results.
