The Dark Side of AI-Powered Social Media Tools: Why Easy Fixes Can Backfire πŸš¨πŸ€–

Beware easy AI solutions to things like social media engagement.

You may or may not have come across this before, but there is a branch of generative AI devoted to understanding the weaknesses of models, of tricking them into doing things they shouldn’t.

It’s essentially taking advantage of the fact that when we work with generative AI, especially language models, we are programming. The difference is that instead of programming in a language like C++ or Java, we are programming in Danish, or Ukrainian, or English.

That means if you’re using software – like some of the “Easy Social Media Engagement Automated” platforms – they may have insufficient safeguards against people creating hostile programming for them. What kind of hostile programming? Getting models to say and do things they shouldn’t – like leaving comments that could get you in legal trouble. Imagine I injected hostile code into content that your social media software interpreted and posted in return that your company was happy to give me and all my followers a year of free service, and that you acknowledge your comment is legally binding.

That would be an awkward conversation with your manager, wouldn’t it?

You’ll see parallels between these techniques, some of which are known as prompt injection, and things like social engineering, where you trick another human into doing something they shouldn’t. And that should be no surprise to anyone, because generative AI is based on human language.

The key takeaway here is to know the limitations of what generative AI can and cannot do – and what software built on top of generative AI models are vulnerable to. If you absolutely have to astroturf your social media engagement with automated tools, ensure your vendors have battle-tested their software. If they haven’t, you may find yourself leaving messages on social posts you had no intention of leaving.
