This week, Katie and I talked about whether the use of AI is “cheating”, which is a phrase we give side-eye to.
If by cheating you mean you’re turning over 100% of your work and processes to the machine and you’re not involved at all… sure, you’re probably not going to get great results.
But if you mean you’re giving AI what you’ve got and asking it for help? That’s not cheating. That’s smart. That’s using the tools to amplify you.
Here’s an example. I’ve been talking about writing this book, Beyond the Velvet Rope, for SIX YEARS now. I have, like, 4 half-assed drafts of it written. They’re all somewhat coherent in spots, but they’re generally a hot mess. 43 chapter drafts for a 10 chapter book.
In the old days, I’d just keep tinkering and probably never publish it. But in the AI age, I hand all 43 chapter drafts to AI and say, okay… we need to get this thing done. The knowledge in it is valuable and useful.
So I handed in the drafts. I had AI sequence it, and then I said… what have I missed? What have I forgotten? I gave it a copy of my ideal customer profile and asked what questions my ideal customer would have that I haven’t answered yet.
And now that I have the questions, I can get out my voice memos app and start answering them. I’ve got time set aside when I’m walking the dog to answer a few questions at a time. I’ll rant. I’ll foam at the mouth. Those of you who bought the deluxe edition of Almost Timeless got the original audio recordings for that, so you know how these will sound.
Katie did the same thing with the new course she’s building. It’s going to be fantastic, because it’s taking all the knowledge she’s already produced in other formats and reorganizing and synthesizing it. It’s still 100% her, just boosted with AI.
At the end of the day, done is what matters. Getting over the finish line. Getting the thing out the door. If getting something made that you previously couldn’t get made because you were stuck is ‘cheating’ then sign me up for much more.
