An interesting side consequence of generative AI in recruiting and hiring is that recruiters, agencies, and partners (Disclosure: I’m an advisor to GlobalPros.ai, an AI-assisted hiring platform) are more relevant than ever.
I used to be a technical recruiter. I lasted 6 months, because it’s a punishing job, always looking for new job orders to fill, always looking for new candidates to place. It’s selling in both directions, the true definition of a middleman.
AI and technology tend to disintermediate. They tend to cut out the middleman. Anyone can be a published author with Amazon KDP, no matter your level of skill. Anyone can be a musician and post their music online. There’s no one gatekeeping, no one blocking your access to the audience as a whole.
But with the advent of generative AI, recruiters are now SWAMPED. AI automation, like OpenAI Operator, can literally apply for hundreds of jobs per hour on your behalf – and that’s not counting dedicated software like AI Hawk, which can do the same thing at ridiculous speed for LinkedIn Easy Apply jobs. AI Hawk, properly operated, can apply for up to 5,000 jobs a day.
Which means every recruiter now has a massive landslide of candidates, all of whom appear highly qualified because AI tools also rejigger a custom cover letter and CV for every position, with varying degrees of truthfulness.
What is recruiting like when every candidate looks awesome on paper?
It sucks. It’s a huge time suck to weed out the wheat from the chaff.
Which is why recruiters and agencies and partners are suddenly back in. Hiring managers and HR departments are willing to pay the fees to save their in-house hiring teams’ sanity. When 5,000 resumes/CVs arrive in the first hour of a job posting, there’s simply no way for even the best folks to dig through that in a timely fashion – whereas a recruiter, agency, or partner already has a stable of vetted candidates.
We’re going to see more situations like this, where trusted intermediaries help cut down the noise that AI helps people generate, where real human relationships are part of the equation. For job seekers, your absolute best bet these days is to build your real network, to have people you know connect you with opportunities. For agencies and partners, this is how you market in an AI-first world where every candidate has been polished to a shine by ChatGPT and made indistinguishable.
And for hiring managers? You’ll probably be doing a lot more in-person interviews, because that’s the only way you know someone isn’t being coached by AI just off camera.
