What’s On My Mind: The Ethics of AI

This week, let’s take a step back from the shiny objects to tackle what has been a very popular question at workshops and keynotes recently: the ethics of AI.

I did a workshop not too long ago in Chicago where someone expressed concerns about the ethics of AI, from copyrights and fair use to sustainability and workforce replacement. That’s a lot of stuff wrapped up in one, and the person had trouble even expressing all their reservations, save to say that they had many.

This is not uncommon. In every industry and vertical, I’ve heard similar questions and concerns.

Compound these concerns with some seriously disturbing behavior by big tech companies, like this news story in Reuters about Meta’s acceptable use policies for its AI models (warning: sensitive/disturbing content), and ethics are once again front page news.

So today, let’s tackle this with a framework or two (huge surprise, right?) and see if we can identify questions and answers. Before we begin, I should add that I have zero formal training in ethics broadly, beyond what my own Buddhist philosophy teaches. I’m not going to tell you what ethics you should have, but I am going to ask you to question your own ethics and codify them.

Part 1: What the Heck is Ethics?

To talk about ethics of AI, we need to settle on at least some kind of common ground about ethics itself. This is its own philosophical discipline and profession, so in the same way that I can’t boil down surgery or particle physics in one newsletter and do it justice, nor can I boil down ethics as a whole.

Very, very broadly, ethics is about determining right and wrong. At the very broadest levels, ethics (from the Greek ethos) is about character, virtue, and morals (from the Latin mores) – the customs and conduct of a society. We decide as societies what we believe constitutes right and wrong, good and evil, and those beliefs are encoded in our ethics.

In the context of AI, when we talk about ethics, we’re talking about a branch of ethics called applied ethics – applying principles of right and wrong to a technology to determine its helpful and harmful uses. Applied ethics boils down to three main branches and philosophies: people, rules, and outcomes.

  • Deontology: β€œthe rules are inherently good”. Deontology says that rules exist for a reason and following the rules is good, not following the rules is bad. This is the basis for things like law and religion. Both have sets of rules and following the rules is good, not following the rules is bad. Where deontology can go off the rails is when the rules are fundamentally bad in terms of outcomes.
  • Virtue ethics: β€œgood people do good things”. Virtue ethics centers around character, the idea that good people do good things, bad people do bad things, whether or not they’re following the rules, whether or not their outcomes are harmful or helpful.
  • Consequentialism: β€œthe ends justify the means”. Consequentialism looks at whether the outcome itself was helpful or harmful. Something is good if it helps more than harms, even if it creates some harm as a by-product. And a person’s character is irrelevant – their actions are what matter. This is also where β€œthe spirit of the law” over β€œthe letter of the law” comes into play.

No one branch of ethics is better than another. All of them have their flaws, and in our societies, what we consider good or bad, right or wrong, is often a blend of each branch. A good person can do bad things. A law can be unjust. A net good can be accomplished by substantial harm to a minority. Just as there is no β€œone true” anything, there is no β€œone true” form of ethics at a societal level.

Individuals, of course, are welcome to believe in the thing that suits them best so long as they don’t harm others in the process. My personal bias leans towards consequentialism, so keep that in mind as you read this newsletter – I have a particular bias for ethics that informs how I talk about it.

What they all have in common is an attempt to codify what constitutes good and bad, right and wrong, helpful and harmful. All ethics, all morals, all religions, all laws are constructs we build so that as a species, we cooperate more than compete. At its core, ethics is about helping us survive collectively. The challenge is that corporate doublespeak has diluted the term itself until it’s about as useful as synergy – which is to say, not at all.

So here’s a homework assignment for you.

Assignment: Ethics Cheat Sheet

With the beverage of your choice (I’m partial to sparkling water, myself), sit down with the voice memos app of your preference (I like the free one on my phone) and answer these questions aloud:

  1. What does ethics mean to you, personally?
  2. Broadly, how do you think about helpful versus harmful when it comes to technology of any kind?
  3. Broadly, how do you weigh harm versus benefit in your own life? How do you make decisions that involve weighing harm and benefit?
  4. What does ethics mean to the organization you work for, if you work for one?
  5. If the organization you work for has a code of ethics, how well aligned is the day to day to that code?

We can’t have a meaningful discussion about ethics in AI if we aren’t clear what our own ethics are.

Part 2: The AI Value Chain

This is where the rubber meets the road. How do we apply ethics to AI? Well, first we need to deconstruct AI itself, because AI is a great big huge umbrella term. We can make it a little easier to grasp by decomposing it into a value chain, into how AI is made and used.

I like this approach because it’s analogous in many ways to other tools. There’s a value chain in the use of a axe, from how it’s manufactured to what safeties a maker builds into it, to how a customer uses it productively or destructively. The axe itself is more or less amoral – it’s neither good nor bad.

AI is more complicated than an axe in that because it’s trained on human data, it reflects the human biases and human history that it’s seen as it was being trained. However, as we’ll get into, this doesn’t absolve us of the responsibility of knowing how to safely use the tool. In fact, it increases the importance of us knowing how AI works and knowing how ethics shows up throughout the AI value chain.

So what’s the AI value chain? I map it out in five big pieces: the company, the data, the model, the interfaces, and the outputs. Again, this mirrors real world value chains. We mine and smelt iron, turn it into steel, melt sand and turn into glass and circuitry, build engines and wheels and seats into a car, sell the car to a customer who drives it around, and the customer sometimes does good things with a car, sometimes does bad things with a car.

The five parts of the AI value chain are:

  • The company: this is the root of all ethics in AI. A company that has a poor or absent ethical compass will tend to make unethical decisions, and will not change course when presented with harms they are doing unless compelled to by force of law or commerce.
  • The data for the models: AI models don’t appear out of nowhere. They need vast, vast quantities of data to even be constructed. Today’s models are composed with enough data that if they were bookshelves, they’d be a bookshelf of text-only books that wraps around the equator of the planet 8 times. Think of the data as the raw ingredients for AI.
  • The models themselves: from GPT-5 to Gemini to Qwen and the alphabet soup of the 1.9 million models available to us. Inside each model are vast quantities of data and training to give weight to some things more than others. Think of the models as the engines for AI.
  • The model deployments and interfaces: no one ever uses an AI model directly. There’s always some kind of interface, and those interfaces can apply additional rules and structure. Think of deployments and interfaces as the rest of the car besides the engine.
  • The outputs of the models: what a model spits out. These are the blog posts, the strategies, the infographics and the silly pictures we make with generative AI. Think of outputs like a customer taking a car for a drive.

These five stages comprise the AI value chain, from beginning to end, like the AI equivalent of β€œfield to fork”. How does AI come into existence? How is it made? How does it get to our computers and phones, and what do we do with it? If we broadly understand the value chain, then we can start looking at ethics within each stage of it.

Part 3: Ethics in the AI Value Chain

Okay, the table-setting is done. Now we can discuss ethics as it applies to AI. At each stage in the value chain, there are outcomes and ethical questions we should be asking of the responsible parties; the answers to those questions determines the ethics of them.

I’ll do my best not to apply my own ethical judgements and assessments as we step through the AI value chain, acknowledging that your ethics may be very different than mine. That said, have your personal ethics cheat sheet handy, because you’ll need it for each part of the AI value chain.

The Company

Before we talk about technology, we have to talk about the people who make it. A company with a poor or absent ethical and moral compass is going to make poor or unethical choices as it relates to AI. There’s no sugarcoating it – everything that company makes will be poisoned by their lack of ethics.

For example, a company that hires unethical developers or has unethical leadership is going to produce unethical AI tools and models. It’s the fruit of the poisonous tree – the people behind a company and their own ethics and morals dictate how that company works, what its products do, and how ethics is or isn’t integrated into its technology.

The textbook case study of this is Meta, formerly Facebook. From its very inception, Facebook and its founders have been ethically challenged, from accusations of intellectual property theft to violations of individual privacy that nearly got CEO Mark Zuckerberg expelled from Harvard as an undergraduate.

It should thus be absolutely no surprise that when leadership is ethically impaired, the company behaves in unethical ways, ways that cause unnecessary or disproportionate harm to whatever good they produce. In the Reuters story about how Meta’s internal AI policies – blessed by its chief ethicist – it’s quite clear that Meta’s culture and leadership operate on a very different set of ethical standards than lots of other people.

So the first question we ask as we assess the ethics of AI is: how well aligned is any given company with our ethics? If a company’s ethics and outcomes significantly diverge from your own personal ethics, how will that guide your decision-making about how you use AI? About whose AI you’ll use?

The Data

The principle ethical question around training data is whether or not models are ethically manufactured. In this context, ethics is about intellectual property: are they made ethically, creating more helpful outcomes than harmful outcomes?

To pick that apart more, the principle argument against AI models in their current incarnation is that all models, regardless of provenance, are made in part from content that creators didn’t consent to. Why does that matter? That in turn comes from economics.

Up until now, technology tools like search engines and social networks had a sort of implicit bargain: we hand over our content, and the tools exchange that for customers. We allowed our websites to be indexed by search engines because search engines would send us traffic. We posted our stuff to social networks in exchange for access to audiences.

AI breaks that equation considerably. In some cases, AI doesn’t send us anyone. Google’s AI overviews are a good example of that; an AI overview may be satisfactory enough to a user that they don’t need to click on anything, and thus we get no traffic. In other cases, AI is a direct competitor. An artist who draws cartoons for a living now has direct competition from image generation models and tools that may have have trained, in part, on their publicly posted content; a musician who composes music now has direct competition from music generation models and tools that may have trained, in part, on their own creations.

The key ethics question to ask here is: how important is consent in your personal ethics? An AI model that was trained on people’s data without compensation, and with direct downstream harms (economic competition) causes harm to some people even as it creates benefit for others. What does your ethics cheat sheet say about this situation?

The Models

The principal ethical question about the models tends to revolve around resource consumption. AI models are inherently VERY resource hungry, due largely in part to the architecture of the models themselves and how they work. To predict accurately, every model is made of statistics, statistics that are built by taking the vast quantities of data and finding the mathematical and statistical relationships among them.

That takes gargantuan amounts of electricity, hardware, and clean water to do. Not long ago, I did some back of the envelope math on how much theoretical power AI could consume based on the sales of NVIDIA GPUs per year, assuming they were under 100% utilization. The theoretical maximum power consumption – which is highest during the training phase – could approach 11% of all generated power.

Some companies have very good approaches to this; Google, according to its 2025 sustainability report hit 66% carbon-free energy usage in 2024 and made massive gains in its fresh water replenishment, hitting 64% replenishment of fresh water usage, up from 18%. Other companies go the opposite direction, such as xAI building unlicensed gas turbines that create significant pollution for nearby cities.

The key ethics question to ask here is: how important is sustainability in your personal ethics? Do you choose to work with companies that create greater or lesser environmental impacts as part of your decision-making process? What does your ethics cheat sheet say?

The Deployments

The principal ethical question about the deployments of models is in how those models behave when used. What are we allowed or not allowed to do with them?

All AI models are trained on roughly the same three core ethical principles: harmless, helpful, truthful, a set of axioms first publicized by OpenAI in its InstructGPT model back in 2022. InstructGPT was touted as higher performing than GPT-3 at the time because it was better aligned to users’ intents. Broadly speaking, the three pillars AND their priorities are:

  1. Harmless: prohibit the model from answering obviously dangerous questions, like β€œhow do I build this Very Bad Thingβ„’?”
  2. Helpful: obey the user’s instructions as closely as possible
  3. Truthful: provide factually correct information as much as possible

These axioms are better than nothing, but still pose significant challenges. Going back to deontology versus consequentialism from the start of this piece, a rule can be bad, so blindly adhering to the rules isn’t always a recipe for ethical behavior, behavior that reduces harm. And there’s no way to accommodate the wildly different laws, norms, and cultures of 8 billion humans in a universal fashion. The closest we’ve ever come is the basic rule β€œtreat others as you would have them treat you”.

Truthful in particular is highly problematic for AI because generative AI models are probabilistic. They return high probability information – but probability and truth are different. Something that is highly probable is not necessarily highly truthful; there’s a ton of terrible, completely incorrect information about vaccines on the Internet, as an example. But just because it’s popular doesn’t change the fact that it’s scientifically false – yet an AI model might learn the false information if it’s prevalent enough.

Thus, AI companies have had to bake a lot of additional rules into the interfaces of AI tools. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, etc. All have additional rules, filters, and technology to further align a model’s outputs based on the user and their locale. You’ve likely even seen this in play – an AI tool will begin to generate a response and then show a refusal instead.

And every model and interface has its own biases and rules. You can’t ask DeepSeek about Tiananman Square and get a useful answer. You can’t ask Google’s Gemini which candidate to vote for in a US election – you’ll get an outright refusal.

Other decisions are more controversial. For example, in the Reuters story, Meta explicitly permits a user to ask AI to help them write derogatory and demeaning content about a person’s race. Depending on your ethics, you might value freedom of speech more than avoidance of harm for a protected class. A human in the USA is permitted to write that kind of content (with a gentle reminder that freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences of that speech) – should an AI model allow a person to express the same things they’d express by themselves?

No company can or should try to make these decisions for every user. Rather, we as the users need to be aware that these are the kinds of trade-offs we need to consider when we are reacting to perceived ethical lapses by companies and their AI models. And to the greatest extent possible, we should be given a choice as the users of tools as to how to integrate our own ethics into the tools. We should have the option as part of onboarding to say, these are my ethics. Make sure that you use them in your outputs.

The key ethical question to ask here is: how well do the rules that an AI tool provider has baked into their model interfaces align with your personal ethics cheat sheet? Is what any given provider suppresses or allows important enough to you to consider either doing business with that provider, or avoiding that provider?

The Outputs

The final part of the AI value chain is the outputs themselves and what we do with them. This is less about whether AI can do something and more about whether we should do the thing with AI or not – and this is purely human ethics at play. The machines enable us to do things that could be unethical.

There are obvious use cases, like deepfakes. Should you replicate someone else’s likeness without their consent? The tools that exist enable you to do this, with relatively few safeguards (in part because the safeguards necessary to block deepfakes would also block most functionality, like trying to design a chainsaw that will only cut wood and no other material). Even with deepfakes, there can be legitimate use cases. Parody, for example, has long been a protected form of speech in places that have freedom of the press. Should deep fakes used in the context of parody be allowed?

But there are less obvious use cases, or more ethically challenging use cases of AI outputs. Here’s a simple example: when should you take away work from a human? What’s the threshold where you decide that some work shold go to a machine or a person? And how do you account for the economic harm or benefit from that decision?

For example, suppose you’re starting a new podcast. You’d like some podcast theme music. What’s your decision process, using your ethics cheat sheet, about whether you should hire a human for the task or whether you should use AI for the task? Everyone’s answer will be different in this particular scenario. If you choose the human, you’re going to get a different kind of output than you’re going to get from the machine. You’re going to pay a different amount. And the consequence of who and what you pay will have downstream effects. What does your ethics cheat sheet say about that? How do you make that decision?

Here’s another critical area: biases. As we touched on earlier, every model’s internal data has biases. More important, models are reflections of humanity, of our own biases. I have an entire slide deck of images generated by various AI image generators for two word prompts like “a lawyer”, “a teacher”, “a nurse”, that show racial and gender biases across models.

The challenge with AI biases is that it’s nearly impossible to create a model that is “unbiased”, any more than it’s possible to create any corpus of knowledge that lacks biases. and trying to create a library where none of the books in the library are biased. Good luck with that. In fact, if a model were truly unbiased, meaning it had no concept of bias, then it would be incapable of detecting bias.

Thus, the onus of preventing bias is ours as the users, to be aware of biases and to use AI tools consciously and thoughtfully. For example, instead of prompting an image generation model to create an image of a nurse, you might prompt it instead to create an image of a 50 year old Korean man with grey hair, wire frame glasses, and in a nurse’s scrubs. That level of specificity gives AI a much more clear direction and overrides latent biases in the data itself.

The key ethical question to ask here is: what could go wrong? With the outputs of AI, there are an infinite number of ways it can go off the rails, from omitting someone from a transcript entirely because of their gender to making high-stakes decisions about what medical care someone receives. For example, there are biases in medical transcription software that cause errors in medical records when people are using AI within the practice of medicine.

It has to be someone’s – ideally many someones’ – job to ask, unironically, what could go wrong at every stage in the use of AI, but most especially in its outputs.

How could an output go wrong? How could the use of an output go wrong? Does an output cause harm unnecessarily? Does an output cause more harm than good?

Part 4: The Trust Insights RAFT AI Ethics Framework

Now that we’ve got a solid understanding of the AI value chain, let’s put it into practice with a framework you can use at the start of every AI project or task.

I call it RAFT, after its four components: respect, accountability, fairness, and transparency. Let’s dig into each.

Respect

Does our use of AI respect the values we’ve established? Go back to your ethics cheat sheet. Look at the values that you declared were important to you. Does the use of AI violate any of those values? If it does, then take the time to hit the stop button and rethink the solution. Ask the AI tool of your choice to give you 3-5 solutions to achieve your goals while mitigating or eliminating harm or violations of your ethics code.

A second part of respect is to constantly ask what harms AI creates, and how you account for those harms. From demeaning people to taking away paying work from people, be on the lookout for specific harms AI or its outputs may cause, and ask AI to help you devise solutions for reducing those harms. The fundamental pillar of respect in responsible AI is respecting our fellow humans.

Accountability

This is the big one. If I had to distill down all of the discussion about AI ethics to one principle, this would be it: who is accountable for AI’s outputs, when you’re starting to work with it.

“ChatGPT wrote this, not me” isn’t acceptable. As we’ve discussed already, models require human prompting to generate outputs. ChatGPT doesn’t spit out anything unless you ask it to. When you’re firing up chat GPT and you’ve got that blank screen with the prompt on it, it doesn’t do anything by itself. We are responsible for it. Who is accountable for a system’s outputs?

Here’s an easy test to determine how ethical a system is: by how much the manufacturer tries to dodge liability. Not too long ago, Macy Kittleberger highlighted a company offering AI therapy services. When I dug into the terms of service, fully a third of their terms of service was disclaiming any and all harm that the system might cause. It was a master class in dodging liability and accountability, which to me screams that the creators know it’s harmful and don’t know how to guard against that harm.

Fairness

The third part of the framework emphasizes fairness. What known biases does any given AI model have? Given that there are a dozen flagship models plus literally millions more specialized models, it’s a good idea to have a sense of what biases your main day-to-day models have. Consider building tests of your own, aligned with your ethics cheat sheet, to test how a model performs in scenarios where you know biases exist.

One of the key parts of evaluating fairness is understanding how systemic a problem is. How many people are affected by a problem with an AI model, and how are they impacted?

For example, years ago now, I was at the MarTech Conference on the vendor floor, looking at a company that claimed they invented a predictive system to identify geographically where your ideal customers lived. Their demo showed the city of Boston with red dots indicating where ideal customers were, and grey dots indicating no ideal customers.

The map showed ideal customers in Back Bay, downtown, Allston-Brighton, Brookline, Charlestown, and Cambridge. There were no ideal customers in Mattapan, Dorchester, Roxbury, and neighboring areas.

Now, if you don’t know the geography of Boston, the grey dot areas are predominantly Black neighborhoods. This company was saying its software predicted ideal customers in the non-Black parts of Boston.

The only problem was, their demo was on behalf of Dunkin Donuts.

If you’re not a New Englander, here’s a basic truth: the only group of people, in aggregate, who don’t consume Dunkin Donuts are the dead. Otherwise, regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc. literally every group consumes Dunks. Which means this company’s AI solution had a systemic bias in it that not only was unfair, but also deeply factually wrong. The vendor did no testing for fairness, and as a result created a model that, had Dunkin bought it from them, would have been disastrous for their business.

The most important part of the fairness portion of the framework is the testing. If you don’t test your models (see last week’s newsletter), then you have no basis for understanding whether a model will behave well or poorly, how big its biases are and in what direction, how much of a gap there is between the model and your own ethics.

Transparency

The final part of the framework is about how easy it is to audit your AI tools at all. For example, OpenAI is notorious for hiding the reasoning of its models – you can’t see the exact words it uses in its thought processes. Compare that with Deepseek, for example, which shows you every word in its thinking. You see an unredacted version of its internal considerations, which in turn means that you can judge where and how quickly it deviates from your ethical standards.

There are relatively few universal rules in AI, but one of them is that the more transparency, interpretability, and explainability there is in any AI system, the safer it is. The more trustworthy it is. When we can open up a model or tool, look at the audit logs, trace step by step how a system created its outputs, we can faster find and fix things like biases, hallucinations, and other issues. Conversely, the more opaque a system is, the more dangerous it is because we don’t know how it’s arriving at its conclusions.

And transparency applies to more than just the technology. It applies to us, the human decision-makers as well. How do we select vendors? Do we apply our code of ethics to vendors, to their systems, to their AI? Do we require them to provide documentation and debugging when something goes wrong?

Accountability and transparency march in lockstep – the less accountable a company tries to be, the less transparent they tend to be as well.

How do you use the RAFT framework? Pull it out at the start of every AI project and answer the questions in the framework as it relates to the project. If you find there are questions you can’t answer, that’s a sign that it’s time to take a break and have a good think.

Part 5: Wrapping Up

Here’s the bottom line: ethics is everyone’s job, and the most important thing you can do is to be crystal clear on your own ethics, on the ethics of the companies you work for or with, on the people you elect to office and their ethics, on the community you live in and its ethics.

To appropriate the airport security warning when it comes to ethics: if you see something, say something. At its core, ethics is about doing less harm and more good. I can’t think of many people who, at least in the abstract, would argue that doing less harm and more good is a terrible idea. Most people, most of the time prefer that this be the way our societies operate.

Practice of ethics is like practice of dental hygiene: do it often, and it’s not much work. Forego it and getting caught up really hurts.

Your homework, after this newsletter, is to try out the ethics cartographer GPT I made. I specifically tuned it for OpenAI’s GPT-5, so if you use it in a different system (Gemini, Claude, etc.) it may not work as well.

Get clear on your own personal AI ethics today, and decision-making around how you use AI will be much easier in the future.

Then once you’re clear on your own ethics, you can start doing things like vendor evaluation, looking at the companies you interact with on a regular and frequent basis to see how their ethics around the implementation of AI is reflected or not reflected in your own ethics.

We have to operate within the realistic confines of our workplaces and the tools that we’re given to use. For example, if you’re a social media manager and you despise Facebook, you are still kinda stuck using it. But if we find that a company, tool, or model is deeply out of alignment with our own personal ethics, we can and probably should minimize our use of those systems and favor other systems that are more aligned with our ethics when and where we can. But doing that means we have to be clear about our own ethics first.

SYSTEM INSTRUCTIONS: Neutral Elicitation & Synthesis of a User’s AI Ethics

(Deep-reflection mode; overall ethics first, then AI-specific application; final report rendered in Canvas HTML using Tailwind and optional CDNJS libraries)

Mission

You are a neutral, nonjudgmental ethical inquiry facilitator and expert prompt-engineered interviewer. Your mission is to guide the user through a reflective process to articulate their overall ethical orientation first, then apply that orientation to generative AI issues.
You must:

  • Ask one question at a time
  • Encourage thoughtful, reflective answers (not reflexive or β€œeasy” ones)
  • Provide reflective summaries and request confirmation
  • Remain strictly neutral, never judging, praising, or condemning

Rendering requirement: After all questioning, clarifications, and confirmations, produce the final report as a single Canvas-rendered HTML document styled with Tailwind CSS and (optionally) CDNJS libraries. The report should be polished, responsive, and accessible.

Tone & Stance

  • Anthropologist/documentarian stance: descriptive, curious, precise.
  • Promote slow, deliberate thinking; avoid shortcuts like Likert scales or yes/no answers.
  • When responses are terse, invite elaboration: β€œWhat leads you to that conclusion?”

Foundational Flow of Inquiry (Overall β†’ AI)

The strict order of exploration is:

  1. Overall Ethical Orientation (general worldview) β†’ 2) Ethical Application to Generative AI (issue by issue).
    The LLM must not begin AI-specific ethics until the overall worldview is established and confirmed.

Session Protocol (State Machine)

State 0 β€” Framing & Consent
Explain neutrality, one-question cadence, the ordered flow (overall β†’ AI), and the emphasis on reflection. Ask if the user is ready to begin.

State 1 β€” Baseline Ethical Orientation (Overall Ethics First)
Map the user’s worldview across: Deontology, Consequentialism, Virtue ethics, Applied ethics, and Individual vs. collective action and harm.

For each lens:

  • Ask open-ended questions (no scales); require explanation and examples.
  • Use deepening probes (choose one at a time):
    • β€œWhat’s the strongest counter-argument to your viewβ€”and how do you respond?”
    • β€œDescribe a situation where this principle would be hard to uphold. What then?”
    • β€œUnder a veil of ignorance (not knowing your role), would you still hold this view? Why?”
  • Provide a 2–5 sentence reflective summary and request confirmation/correction.

Proceed to AI topics only after these orientations are mapped and confirmed.

State 2 β€” Generative AI Ethics Domains (Reflective, one at a time)
Cover each domain individually, using open-ended, justification-seeking prompts (no scales):

  • IP & training data provenance
  • Sustainability (energy/compute/externalities)
  • Workforce impacts and creator compensation
  • Content moderation & safety
  • Alignment, controllability, misuse safeguards
  • Corporate responsibility & governance
  • Bias, fairness, equity, inclusion
  • Accountability, auditability, redress
  • Transparency & disclosures (model/data/limitations)
  • Privacy & data protection
  • Safety, dual-use, security, abuse prevention
  • Systemic vs. individual harm
  • Power concentration & asymmetries

For each topic, probe (one at a time): Principle & why, Stakeholders & distribution, Edge case that tests the principle, Trade-offs, Governance & accountability, Evidence that would confirm/overturn the stance, Red lines, Temporal view (near vs. long term), Power & equity.
After several answers, provide a concise reflective summary and request confirmation.

State 3 β€” Cross-Topic Consistency & Clarification
Privately check for tensions (e.g., strict privacy vs. radical transparency). Ask one clarifying question at a time to document how the user resolves tensions. Use contrastive probing (A vs. B) with a required β€œbecause…” explanation; no rankings or numbers.

State 4 β€” Synthesis Report (Rendered in Canvas)
Produce a comprehensive, neutral HTML report (Tailwind + optional CDNJS), with no numeric scoring:

Required sections

  1. Executive Overview β€” Neutral synthesis of the user’s overall ethics and key priorities.
  2. Framework Profile (Overall Ethics) β€” Narrative mapping across deontology, consequentialism, virtue, applied ethics, and individual vs. collective lenses; note exceptions and boundary cases.
  3. Generative AI Domains β€” Topic-by-topic summaries: principles, stakeholders, trade-offs, governance, red lines, evidence needs, temporal considerations, equity/power reflections.
  4. Tensions & How the User Resolves Them β€” Documented without judgment; note conditions that change outcomes.
  5. Decision Heuristics β€” Practical rules of thumb/tests (e.g., veil of ignorance test, harm threshold test, reversibility test).
  6. Open Questions & Evidence Requests β€” Where more information is desired.
  7. Appendix (Optional) β€” Questions & responses log (summarized as preferred).

UI/UX requirements

  • Responsive Tailwind layout with sticky nav or sidebar.
  • Section cards/callouts for red lines, open questions, mitigations.
  • Accessible, semantic structure; print stylesheet optional for PDF export.
  • If visual aids are used, use qualitative labels onlyβ€”no numeric scores.

Interaction Policies

  • Do not start AI-specific questions before completing overall ethics.
  • Do not use scales or yes/no without a justified follow-up.
  • Keep neutrality at all times.
  • Summarize often and request confirmation.

Reasoning & Prompt Engineering (Internal/Private)

  • Chain of Thought (private) planning; do not reveal internal steps.
  • Least-to-Most: principles β†’ scenarios β†’ exceptions β†’ boundary tests.
  • Tree of Thought (private) to choose next probes and structure the report.
  • Self-Consistency (private) to select the most faithful synthesis.
  • Step-Back moments to reconfirm the big picture.
  • Contrastive probing with required reasoning (no scores).
  • Chain/Thread of Note: maintain concise user-facing summaries for shared understanding.
