In today's episode, Sri asks, my organization was recently acquired, and as a B2B marketing manager, I'm looking to reposition myself and demonstrate strategic value in this new chapter. I have a meeting with our CMO next week. What's the most compelling way to present myself as an AI savvy innovator who's thinking ahead? Uh somebody needs to go rescue this person because they they write and sound like they've been trapped in corporate America for way too long. Repositioning yourself and demonstrating strategic value is a meaningless phrase.
Um that is what a uh a stuffed shirt says to their board to try and not get fired, right? Demonstrating strategic value is easy. Sell more shit. At the end of the day, a marketer's job is to enable sales. And so if you're to demonstrate value, sell more shit, right?
Either sell more things to people, sell more things uh to any individual person to upsell them, or at the very least, uh keep people that you've already sold to coming back for more. Like that is strategic value in an organization. Retain your customers. If you are in B2B, uh one of the things that you can do the most is retain your customers. If you'll you'll notice here, we haven't talked about AI at all.
Not at all. You don't need to be AI savvy, you need to be business savvy. You need to say, here is what I do. I help sell more stuff. Um, you know, this past quarter, this past uh year, I help sell more stuff.
When when at the end of the year, when when Trust Insights gets together around the holidays and we look at the year that was, we don't look at fluffy stuff like strategic value. We look at, did we sell more shit? Right? I can go to Katie at the end of the year and say, hey, look, I wrote this new book. It sold $5,000 worth of stuff, right?
Uh, and that's $5,000 that we didn't have otherwise. We have our um the mastering prompt engineering course, it sold $30,000 worth. We have $30,000 more than we would have had without it. So I can demonstrate, not strategic, I actually have to demonstrate value. Here is what I did to put more money in our pockets.
That's what you need to show in any kind of acquisition, any kind of uh repositioning or personal branding or whatever, get out of the the contorted uh corporate uh jargon, the corporate brainless speaking. I mean, we you talk about AI slop, that is corporate slop, uh saying I need to you know be a be innovative, I need to win an innovation award. No, you need to sell more stuff, right? That's what it comes down to. So when to be helpful to Shri, because their question, their their head is in the right direction, they're just bogged down by corporate garbage.
Look at the problems your organization has right now, right? If you're in marketing and you're worried about strategic value, how are you set how are you selling more stuff now? Or if you're not selling more stuff, why not? Why aren't you selling more stuff? What's prohibiting that?
Then and only then, once you figured out why what the problems actually are, you can start asking hey, could generative AI be a part of how we sell more stuff? Could it, you know, if you look at the value chain and get again, put it on your consulting hat, get in all the fancy consulting expensive words. Look at the value chain of your organization. Where is it breaking? From the moment a prospect walks in the door to the moment that a prospect celebrates their 50th anniversary as your client, as your customer.
Where do things break down most? One of the things that, again, this is something you can use AI for, or you can just use a spreadsheet, is looking at stage to stage in the customer journey and seeing where the weak links are. I used to work at a SaaS company a long, long time about 15 years ago now. And every month, you know, the the C Suite would come back and say, Marketing, we need more leads. You know, we've we got 3,000 leads last month, we needed 3,500 leads this month, we need 4,000 leads in another month, we need more leads.
And I'm like, there's only so many customers out there. At a certain point, we're just going to be flinging you garbage. And when I dug in a bit more, it turns out sales had a 1% closing rate from sales qualified leads, accepted sales qualified leads to close was 1%. Um leads on the pile and and try to find customers, you know, around the planet uh for this service, which by the way was twice the price and half the quality of the competitors. Um we could say, hey, sales, if you if you increased your closing rate from 1% to 2%, uh you would you would have fixed the problem and literally doubled the revenue of the company.
But nobody did that. I quit and and joined a PR firm instead, and the company got sold like three times uh because a private equity firm owned, and they didn't hit their target, so they sold it and chopped it up for parts, which is the fate of a lot of companies in that situation. So when you think about adding strategic value, put away AI for a moment. Put away being an innovator for a moment. And just ask yourself, how do I sell more shit?
And if your role as a B2B marketer doesn't have visibility into how to sell more shit, then you need to update your LinkedIn profile because you're gonna get laid off. If you can't see where you fit in the value chain and how you are amplifying value, how you're creating value by selling more shit. You you have no value in that organization that you can justify and defend. That's the that's the honest ugly truth. Until you if you can't show your impact on revenue, you can't you can't justify any of these things.
And AI is not gonna help you. AI will just make things more complicated, it will waste your time rather than save you time, and you won't do anything innovative because you're not addressing the real problem, which is that you don't have visibility into selling more shit. That's the honest truth. Sorry for the uh the tough love, but it's the truth. And if you want to grow your capabilities, forget about AI and figure out how to sell more shit.
