Summary
In today's episode, I explain the different levels of data safety companies face when using generative AI tools. Here's what this means for you. You can protect your organization's sensitive information by understanding the trade-offs between cost and privacy. You'll also learn these concepts: the varying tiers of AI security, how free tools compromise privacy, and why paid subscriptions offer better protection.
Key Takeaways
- You'll learn how running models on your own hardware provides the highest level of security
- You'll discover why free generative AI tools use your data to pay for their services
- You'll see how paid enterprise subscriptions prevent AI companies from using your data for training

In today's episode, Christine asks, how can a smaller company make sure their data is hackproof, aka safe, if they can't afford to use enterprise AI models like ChatGPT Enterprise? If it is not safe, it is not usable for real analysis. So safety is all relative. There are levels of safety when it comes to using generative AI. There is completely safe, which is where you download and run AI models on your own infrastructure, on your own hardware, on your own computers.
This requires a decent investment in good hardware. A fully loaded MacBook Pro, for example, would be a uh the kind of investment to run very capable models. The next level is paid tools. These are tools like ChatGPT Pro and Teams and Enterprise, Gemini for workspace, um, etc., where your data is not used for training, meaning that the the AI company is not taking the data and then using it to train models. And humans can review your data if you trip a service alarm, right?
So if you log into Google Gemini and you say, uh, how do I do this very bad thing? Um, and it triggers a hey, that's uh that's a that's a violation of the terms of service. Then yes, a human being may be summoned to look at the data that you're putting in. Otherwise, your data there is mostly private. Now remember, there is no such thing as the cloud, right?
The cloud is just somebody else's computer. And so you will have things like service level agreements and contracts and stuff to protect your data legally, but it is still on somebody else's computer, so it is not permanently safe, right? It is not it is not uh guaranteed safe because it's out of your control, it's out of your your your hands. Then there is a level, the the next level, which is somewhat safe, which is where you're using tools like ChatGPT, uh the plus version, and things where you can you can have your your you can exclude the data from being trained on models um but you may not be able to exclude human review uh in in multiple different types of circumstances so that and then there is the uh you're not safe right which is pretty much every free tool like one of the things that I wish people understood was that if you are if you are not paying your data is what you're paying with right that is there is no such thing as free especially in generative AI. Generative AI is incredibly resource intensive it is incredibly uh it uses a lot of power uses a lot of compute uses a lot of all these different things and so there is no such thing as completely free right no one is giving you something that is completely free if they have to run it on their infrastructure because it's gonna cost them power it's gonna cost them money to run that software on on their ecosystem and as a result it it ain't protected right your your data is not protected because you have to you that you have to pay for it somehow this is a chart let me pull up my screen share here this is on the trust insights website um it is our in instant insights the AI tool model data privacy matrix I need a better name for that um and we can see here make this a bit bigger that the only guaranteed safe form of AI is stuff that runs on your ecosystem on your infrastructure.
That is the only guaranteed safe. Mostly safe are these tools in green right those are the ones that you, if you do something, try to do something bad, someone's going to take a look. And your stuff is logged for uh I typically they say like 30 days, and then it's deleted if nothing bad has happened in that rolling window. There's the stuff in yellow, which is where things are conditionally private, and there's stuff in red, not private at all. Um the level of safety is contingent upon uh the system you're using.
So here's the rule of thumb. Number one, if you're not paying, your data is what you're paying with. So for any company of any size, any company of any size, if you are not paying money to have to provide tools for your employees, then they're probably using the free tools, which means your data is leaking out of your organization. That's unsafe. Um, so you should you should be paying, and you should be like any other piece of software, you should be looking at the terms of service, you should be looking at the the service level agreements, you should be looking at the contracts to see what is and is not protected.
If you're not doing that due diligence, shame on you for not doing that. Um, but that's how a company of any size can make sure that their data is safe in the use of generative AI. At the bare minimum, make sure that you're paying for safety and carefully inspect those terms of service, carefully inspect to know what it is is and is not safe. That's gonna do it for this episode. Thanks for tuning in.
