Mind Readings: Sometimes Generative AI Is Not The Answer

In today's episode, oh, you don't need AI for that. Lisa Adams shared something uh with me earlier. Uh, a demo, not hers, of uh an AI agent that someone had built that was using uh the browser use slash computer use capabilities where AI takes control of your computer to uh crawl a website and do SEO analysis right in the browser, and the the demo was saying, Oh, check out this awesome uh age agentic AI that is uh capable of optimizing your website in real time. I took one look at this thing, and I said, they just reinvented SEMrush and Hrefs and Moz and all the other SEO tools that have existed for decades now, in the least efficient, most computationally expensive, most error prone, most resource intensive way possible. This is really stupid.

Whoever made it, I'm not naming names because I don't actually remember the name. I remember the name of the tool, but I'm uh I'm not gonna give it any uh daylight, is almost certainly one of the uh AI agent hype rows who clearly has an agentic framework or something to sell. But it's completely utterly unnecessary. SEO and page optimization, even with generative AI was solved a while ago, right? Uh page optimization in general is solved, I don't know, 10 years ago.

Um using things like a Chrome web driver or uh Selenium in headless mode or any other things to look at a page and understand how to optimize the content. Yeah, that's been done. It's been done and it's proven. There are really great tools that do that now. This approach, using an AI agent, using computer use, isn't better in any way.

It's slower, it is more error prone, it is more expensive. It was built clearly with the intent to show off AI agents. And it was also built by someone who doesn't know a thing about SEO. Pretty clearly. Otherwise, if you did, you would know that you don't have to do most of the tasks that the agent was trying to do on page.

You can do all that just with the HTML, because you don't need to see the interface to do inner to do uh SEO. You need to see the code because that's what Google sees. That's what Bing sees. That's what you know everyone, every search engine sees. They look at the code and they don't even look at the full code.

They look at a slimmed down, trimmed version of the code. So clearly, this was built by someone who knows agentic AI to some degree, but has no subject matter expertise in the problem they're trying to solve. And this reflects poorly on generative AI on the AI community and agentic frameworks because it comes across as really desperate. Um showing solutions in search of problems, right? It's a it's a hammer in search of a nail.

When the technology itself, there's a legitimate use case for using that kind of agentic approach. If you wanted to use like a vision model, uh like Quen uh Quen's VLM, that agentic framework would actually be really useful for UI testing to render the page fully as a person would would see it, and then run some usability tests that way. That would actually be really helpful. That's not what this person did. It would be even more helpful if you were to have uh a vision language model or any kind of language model doing computer use, you know, umitate someone with some kind of impairment or disability to test is your site actually compliant with, say, the Accessibility Canada Act or the EU's Accessibility Acts or the Americans with Disability Act, you know, pick a legislation of choice.

There's a lot of ways that that technology would actually be useful. This isn't it. This is someone building an AI solution that nobody asked for, that does everything worse than the current market solutions. Here's the reality. Not every problem needs AI.

And I say this is someone who is in love with the technology and has been for 12 years now. Uh I started work with classical AI, what we call machine learning. Um I love this stuff. I do. Not every problem needs AI.

Not every problem is is suited for AI. Like predictive analytics, for example. Most AI solutions, most modern, you know, high power deep learning solutions, offer little to no improvement over classical statistical methods. That's just a fact, right? Tools like seasonal arema still are within one to two percentage points of the most expensive, elaborate deep learning methods.

And definitely not every problem needs agentic AI, which is incredibly resource intensive. A lot of people make a good point that you know, a single prompt to a tool like ChatGPT costs like the equivalent of like an hour of electricity from a standard household and a bottle of water in terms of how much resources it uses. If you know anything about agentic AI, you know that everything that it's doing is sending queries back and forth to some kind of language model. And if you're not using a model locally on your computer, it's going to a big data center. Now you're sending dozens, if not hundreds, of queries in a few minutes.

And you know, the electricity meter is spinning like this because you're using so many resources to do something that you don't even need AI for. This problem was a solved problem. What I would love for people in the AI space to be doing is to say, what are the unsolved problems? What are the problems that AI could be used for that we can't solve with today's technology? That's where we're going to find value.

That's where we're going to add value. This is something that uh my business partner and and uh CEO Katie Robert talks about all the time. When you lead with the technology, very often you end up with a hammer in search of nail-shaped problems. Finding none, you just start hitting things with the hammer and hope somebody finds it useful rather than annoying or injurious. Start with your purpose.

Start with the problem. Start with the outcome that you're after. Start with the problems you can't solve any other way, and think through what's the best way to solve it, not the best way to use AI. AI is a set of tools and nothing more. It is not a magic wand.

It is not an oracle. It is not some wish-fulfilling jewel. It's a prediction engine. And not every problem can be solved with it. So that would be my caution today.

Beware of the hype bros and the tech bros who are saying AI for everything. It's like saying blenders for everything. Now, if I'm making a steak, I don't want to have a blender anywhere near my sticker. No matter how good the blender is. That's going to do it for today's episode.
