It's another day of exciting AI. Today it looks like Meta has released Llama 3.3. So if we head on over to Llama.com, which is Meta's uh website, uh let's see what they have in store for us. Llama 3.3 is the latest model. Experience leading performance and quality, a fraction of the cost with our latest release.

And let's see what the uh let's see what the table looks like. Okay, here's set 3.17 to 70 brilliant parameter 3.3. Looks like you know some nice improvements, big improvements on instruction uh uh following there. Math, some big improvements, some reasonable reasoning improvements. Uh interestingly, it went down in tool use a little bit.

And uh multi-couple now. The the challenge with this particular chart is that this is terribly formatted. Um so let's take a look at what the same chart looks like if we don't have all that stuff. So the winners are the green uh the lines in green or the boxes in green. So Claude wins on most stuff.

The big llama foundation model wins on the decent stuff. Gemini is served in second. But this new model uh scores 92 on instruction following, period. Uh the best across all these models. That's kind of surprising.

So let's put this to the test. Uh, I'm gonna go into IBM Watson X. So Watson Next is IBM's platform that allows you to choose and run models. Full disclosure, I am an IBM champion, which means that um IBM really compensate, but they do give me like shirts for uh talking about their stuff. Uh I don't get paid money for it.

Uh so let's see what we got. Let's go into the thing and see if it's they released so meta released this about noon eastern time. Let's take a look in here. And there's granite. There's llama 3 and 1, three two, 2, 3, 2, 90.

Ah, there it is. Three three dot three 3 to 37B instruct is already live. This is this version is the FP8 quantized version of the FP16. Okay. Um, for those who are not technical, um, that just means that the the version in here is designed to be more efficient, but still very, very high accuracy.

Let's so instruction following. It got a really good score for instruction following. So let's give it a really complicated prompt to basically rewrite a prompt in itself. So I'm going to put this in here and let's see what happens. If it can successfully follow these instructions to rewrite these instructions for itself.

System instructions for SWOT analysis, strategic roadmap generation. The following instructions are designed data analysis, chain of thought for SWOT analysis, strengthweaknesses, opportunities, self-consistency and gemated knowledge, strategic roadmap generation. This is a really nice prompt. Now this is Llama 3.370B, which is their optimized tuned version. According to stuff online, this is supposedly distilled from the big model.

So let's switch to the big model. Let's see how the same prompt uh performs in the super big model. Yes, that's fine. Okay, same prompt goes in. Let's see what happens.

Task description, chain of thought prompting, zero shot prompting. Interesting. So this is really interesting. This is not how I would have done that. System instruction template.

Okay, so there's the this there's the actual template. There's strategic roadmap. This didn't do such a good job with instruction following. Let me go back to that chart. Uh instruction following.

So Lama 3B, yeah. So 3.1 was scored in 87. 3.1405 scored in 88. And 3.3 scores in 92. The output from the 92 model is is better.

This is not as good. Where's my history? Oh no, it's that's not it. Models in a deprecated state. Um that's fine.

Go to project. That was surprisingly, the 3.3 version of Llama did a better job with what I was asking it to do, which was to create optimized system instructions for doing a SWOT analysis. It adhered to the instructions better, it followed the instructions better. That's kind of surprising. Because the 405 billion parameter model, generally speaking, parameters are statistical relationships between stuff in a model's knowledge base.

The fact that the 405 billion parameter model, it should have been smarter. It should have been smarter at following directions because it has so much more knowledge baked into it. The the new model, which is 70 billion parameters, so that's what uh a quarter the size, give or take, is smarter, is really surprising. So I think this is gonna be the new winner for the sort of that that big consumer model. 70 billion parameter model requires about 40 gig of uh video RAM to run really well, to run efficiently.

Uh most people are going to use it in a cloud service like IBM Watson X, because you don't have to worry about the hardware part. If you have a if you have one of the new souped up MacBooks uh or a really nice gaming computer or you have dedicated AI hardware, this is going to be the the new king of the hill for a little while because instruction following is the hardest part for prompt engineering. To get the model to do what it's told to do, and the fact that Llama 3.3 has so much better instruction following is really surprising. So uh that's uh a quick hot take on the new Llama 3.3. If you are using open models, meaning that you're running these locally on your computer and you've got the memory to support it.
