Here's what this means for you. In an AI-enabled, chaotic, attention-starved environment, your brand becomes the shortcut that lands you on customers' mental short lists when they are too overwhelmed to deliberate. You'll also learn these concepts: how brand functions as an emotional aftertaste that drives recall under stress, why survival-mode decision making makes people default to familiar names instead of researching new ones, and how investing in both corporate and personal brands protects you against lengthening sales cycles and shrinking patience.

Key Takeaways

  • You'll learn how brand works as an emotional aftertaste that keeps you memorable long after a customer first encounters you

In today's episode, Michelle asks, what one piece of marketing or PR advice would you give to companies as we head into the new year? Ah, it's that time of year. It is the time of year of trends and predictions and retrospectives and all that stuff. Looking at the big picture, looking at how people are using social media, using digital marketing channels, using artificial intelligence. There's a pretty clear answer.

And the answer has been the same for the last 10 years, but there's more urgency to it now. And that answer is build your brand. Brand is absolutely essential. There's a there's a great definition from Zay Frank from 2006. Uh, brand is the emotional aftertaste of experiences.

What is your emotional aftertaste? Right? What is what is that? How well do people recall you? And then when they do recall you, what do they feel?

You've got to build your brand like you never have before. Invest in your brand like you never have before. Whatever you're spending on brand, it isn't enough. Uh, I can I can tell you that right now. For the people who work with you or for you, help them build their personal brands like they never have before.

Because we are in an AI-enabled search era, a tumultuous, chaotic macro environment. And everything going on from climate disasters to crazy uh you know people running governments and things like that around the world, all that creates a psychological and emotional drain on us, right? On you and me. You and I have less time, less energy, less space to think than ever before. We're overwhelmed.

Our to-do lists keep getting longer. Every company in the world is saying, hey, you got to do more with less, right? What's their favorite uh uh office quote? Work smarter, not harder. Well, you know, you you want both.

And uh even I I co-own my company. Even I am saying this to myself, right? We've got to do more with without costing more. So when you're in that environment where people are under tremendous pressure, what do people do? They go into survival mode.

They go into, I just gotta get through the day, I just gotta get through the week, the month, the year. I want shortcuts. My friend Chris Brogan has this great quote. He says, When times are good, people want strategy. When times are bad, people want tactics.

When you look at how people are approaching things like generative AI and modern digital marketing and social media marketing things, people are right now are asking about tactics. How do I do X? When people are saying that, you know times are not good. Which means instead of investing the time to be thoughtful and investing in the time and effort to do your research to really dig in, people are going to default to heuristics, to snap judgments, to doing what they've always done because that's what they know, and they don't have the bandwidth for more. It's not that they're they're stupid, it's not that they're ignorant, it's because they are so under such strain that they're in survival mode.

What does that mean? It means that they will default to who they know. My friend Mitch Joel has this great quote. He says, It's not who you know, it's who knows you. That is brand.

Brand is being in someone's head, having that mental real estate that you occupy so that when they're under stress, they're like, oh, we we gotta get this AI project going. Who do who can I talk to? Um, Chris Penn, I know Chris Penn, he knows that stuff. I don't have to think, I don't have to research. I boom, I know that brand, I'm gonna go to that brand.

When you you want to order something and it needs to be there the next day, right? Yes, there are a lot of independent vendors and independent stores and artisans, the crafts people. But if you got 30 seconds to make a decision, say, you know, I'm just gonna go to Amazon. I know it, I know it'll get here. It may not be great, but it'll get it off my list.

In 2025, and this is again, it's been the case for 10 years, but in 2025, especially, it really's been the case since the pandemic, people are going to spend less time deliberating and more time just getting things off their lists, unless they are at risk, and then they will deliberate forever, right? If you are in complex marketing, like big ticket high risk marketing, sales cycles and decisions are gonna slow way down. Everyone's gonna be in wait and see, like, okay, is it safe to make this purchase? That's a big purchase, it's a big investment. Maybe not.

Let's let's wait. It's not advice, it's a prediction that sales cycles are gonna are gonna extend into infinity in 2025 because people are going to be dealing with a chaotic environment. They'll be and be risk averse naturally. Your brand is the antidote to that. Your brand is the emotional aftertaste of experiences.

If you communicate trust, safety, being as sure a thing as possible, people it will resonate with people. People will go, you know what? I don't have to think. I'm gonna go with Trust Insights. You know what?

I don't have to think. I'm just gonna go to Marketing Profess B2B4 or social media marketing world or the marketing AI conference. I don't want to have to investigate whether a new show or a new conference is right for me. I I know these brands, they do a good job. It's good enough, it's off my list, done.

The only way to be on people's mental short lists in the next year, in the foreseeable future, is to build your brand. So please, please, please invest the time to build your brand now, starting today. Whenever you're watching this, starting right now. The best time to do this was 10 years ago. The second best time is right now.

So that's my one piece of advice I would give for people as we enter the new year. Thanks for tuning in. I'll talk to you on the next one. If you enjoyed this video, please hit the like button. Subscribe to my channel if you haven't already.
