In today's Do Something With Your Marketing, a short and sweet one. It's the beginning of a new year. It is the beginning of a new quarter. It is the beginning of a new marketing calendar. And one of the most important things that you can do with your marketing right now is to clean up your lists.
I've been doing some list maintenance of my own right now for this newsletter for the almost timely newsletter. And I am astonished at how much of the list acquired within the last year has already decayed out and is no longer valid. We're talking probably you know 10 or 11% of the list gone. Addresses no longer work. Now, if your email marketing software is configured correctly, it should actually be giving you uh bounces after every single send.
It gives you a long list of messages to your inbox that say, hey, this address no longer works. This address no longer works. And you get these technical notices from all the different uh email servers that your system goes out to. If your marketing automation or email marketing software is any good, it should collect those for you and then either automatically process them or manually ask you to process them. Either way, you have to do it.
You have to clean up the list. Every email you send out that goes to an invalid address is a strike against your sending reputation because many of these servers and spam algorithms say, hey, you're setting an awful lot of garbage. Uh to the addresses that don't exist, you're probably a spammer, right? You're at your reputation declines, which is not a position any of us want to be in. So I would say once a quarter, maybe once a month if you have uh a high volume list, and certainly every year, do an exhaustive clean of your mailing list.
Process all the uh unsubscribes, though those should you should be doing every week. Um process all the dead addresses, get them out of there. Um make sure that your unsubscribed lists are up to up to date. Anyone who says they want out, get them out. Um, and then consider using a third party validation service to validate the remainder of the list.
I use one called million verifier. There's zero bounce, never bounce. There's all these different uh companies out there that you upload a list of email addresses, and it tells you good, bad, or otherwise. It's so important to do that. So important to have that in place and store that information.
You should have one of the things I think is is important with email marketing is you have a file, and it can be you know just a spreadsheet on uh on your uh disk drive if you want, or it can be you know more advanced of known dead addresses and make sure that they are loaded to your email system as do not email, just load them straight in. Do not email these addresses, they will not work. They are they are known bad, they're known, they're toast. Don't even try. Having that in your all of your marketing automation systems and in your CRM too, as a as a strike list saying, get rid of these email addresses if somebody puts us in, we know it's no good.
Helps you focus your time, your effort, your budget on all of those uh people who are left on the list who who do work, right? Who are reachable, and that's so that's so important. So this week I want you to clean up your email lists, make everything as spotless as can be, and get ready as uh as you know, we're now after the first full week of business in the new year. We're we're ready to get rolling. This time of year, a lot of people are starting to go to their sales kickoffs, their marketing kickoffs and things.
This cleanliness, this hygiene, will set you up to be more successful, to improve your sending reputation, to reach more of the people that you want, to beat spam filter algorithms that are looking for low performing sends, low performing lists, all those things will happen uh y if you don't clean up your lists. So that's this week's Do Something With Your Marketing. As always, leave your questions in the questions box below, subscribe to the YouTube channel and the newsletter. I'll talk to you soon. Take care.
