In today's episode, I'm at Social Media Marketing World, and I wanted to talk about the two major fundamental branches of generative AI models, at least for language models, which is what people are used to using. And there's two major form factors that you need to understand because they function differently. There are non-reasoning models and reasoning models. And these two things are similar but not the same. A non-reasoning model is the form of language model that you've basically been using for most of generative AI's existence, from the very first chat GPT to even today.
And this is where you go in, you give it a prompt, it does the thing. Reasoning models are relatively new, they're about a year old. And what reasoning models do is they essentially talk aloud to themselves. And sometimes it's hidden, sometimes it's visible. OpenAI, for example, gives you a just a little thinking box and it tells you a quick summary of what it's thinking.
Uh Google Gemini Flash thinking, you can see exactly what it's saying. Deep Seek R1, you can see exactly what it's saying. Grok, you can see exactly what it's saying. And the reason this is important to know is because the prompting structures for them differ. In non-reasoning models, you have to explicitly say, here's how to do this, step by step, follow these instructions, think this through, talk a lot about this, show me your work for this.
It's like an intern. We often I often said I've been saying for years now. Uh, generative AI language models are like interns, the world's smartest, most forgetful interns. You have to tell them everything. You would never tell the intern, go write me a strategic analysis, right?
That's going to go really badly. You would instead say, intern, here's all the information I have about the company. Here's all the information about this. Here's how this framework works. Now to go do the thing.
A reasoning model can think through how to solve the problem for itself. It is like the world's smartest, most forgetful junior manager. You don't need to tell the manager how to do the task. You still need to tell the manager why they're doing the task and what you want and provide them all the background information that you need. And so with Trust Insights, we have two frameworks.
We have the repel framework, which stands for role, action, prime, prompt, evaluate, and learn for non-reasoning models. And then we have the Prism framework, which stands for uh purpose relevant information success measures for reasoning models. And they differ. The repel framework, you gotta spell everything out. You gotta provide all this data and things like that.
In the PRISM framework, you say, here's the purpose, here's what we're trying to do today. Maybe here's a little bit about who the role I want you to play. Here's all the relevant information. And then here's success measures. Here's what I want the outcome to look like.
I want it to look like this. I want it to have this formatting, I want it to have this, all this stuff. If you understand this dichotomy, these two kinds of models, you'll use the correct prompt format to get the best performance out of it. Now, can you just have a normal conversation with them and get those same results? Probably over time.
But if you're trying to be efficient with it, um, you probably want to pick the framework that fits the model. How do you know which model to use? The general rule of thumb is that if you're if you would have a conversation with somebody about it, whatever the task is, use a reasoning model. If you would just give somebody strict directions and say, go and do the thing, don't talk to me about it, go and do the thing. You use a non-reasoning model.
Again, delegation. Um a reasoning model is like a uh a junior to mid-level employee. You might want to sit down and bounce ideas off or that employee. You might say, like, yeah, let's think about this. Let's think this through.
How did how would you approach this problem? Or uh give me some solutions or ideas for this problem, and it will do that. Other times you're like, summarize this thing, right? Uh, go and do the summary. Like, I'm giving you the information, I'm giving you the steps to take.
Here's how I want summaries done, just go and do it. Don't talk to me about it. Just go do it. Go do it. And so that's how you think about these two models.
If you would have a conversation with a person about the task, use a reasoning model. If you would not have a conversation about the task with a person, use a non-reasoning model. You will find in particular in marketing, that means you're going to use reasoning models probably the majority of the time. Because if you're a decent marker, you probably spend a lot of time talking to people. You spend time talking to customers, you spend time talking to coworkers, you spend time talking to stakeholders.
And if you're doing that, then a reasoning model is a good choice as long as you provide as much information as possible. One of the tasks I love doing with reasoning models is taking different documents and having them merge them together and have success measures. Hey, make sure there's no duplicate information. Here's how you resolve conflicts and source documents. Here's uh how to evaluate this.
Go and do the thing, but think it through, like and and talk about how you think this thing through. Reasoning models do very well with that, um, better than non-reasoning models, because they what what's going on behind the scenes is they essentially do a first draft in the reasoning portion. They do that part by themselves. But as is the case with all generative AI language models, the more they can talk, the better they perform. They're like YouTubers or Twitch streamers, or sportscasters.
They've just got to talk. Taking advantage of that with a reasoning model means that when it comes time to do the final draft, it can even look through its first draft that it wrote by itself and go, wow, that was not right. So let's go ahead and maybe not do that. So those are the two branches of models that you need to know to effectively use which model for which task. And again, for marketers, most of the time you're probably going to be using reasoning models, or you should be to get the best performance out of them for most marketing tasks.
